If you could recommend only one PC game in history which would it be?

Ultima Online here too. First game to really throw hundreds of people into a proper virtual world, and let them get on with it with a minimum of rules or guidance. Within a half an hour of starting the game for the first time I'd been tricked, murdered and my corpse left naked in an alley. Awesome stuff.
 
Quake 3 (but from launch - 2008 and the following 3 years - so would need to travel back in time too which would prove a bit problematic :D) - first proper online gaming experience with a great friendly/helpful community as we were all finding our feet with online gaming.

Solo gameplay - StarCraft 2 (or any decent RTS).
