If you don't have Facebook you don't exist... virtually

There are a few mentions here of people taking a picture of their food. I'll put my hand up and say that I'm guilty of that too, but at least I don't have Facebook (or any type of wall) to post it on to :p

Has anyone here had a Facebook account and then deleted it? I'm seriously considering deleting mine. All it's good for is filling my inbox with spam.

Haven't read through much of the thread apart from the first post, however I saw this video earlier this week and feel that it does raise some interesting points regarding FB and other social networks.

I wish I had friends that understood that I am not a weirdo for not having facebook.
I have facebook, I have never posted anything. I don't have anything to say.

Well that doesn't stop you from being on it. I've just removed all my personal information, deleted everything from my timeline, and made absolutely everything private (although it's better just to not fill in any of the personal info stuff, it's not mandatory).

So you can have an account which just acts as a contact point, and nothing more. Does take some work to trawl through all the settings, however. Literally about an hour's worth of tweaking, and a bit of Googling.

Exactly. Its also a good place to dump pictures (better than paying for cloud storage!). Set all the albums to "Just Me" and you have all of your pictures uploaded, in organised albums, that only you can see :)

You're aware that you have full control over what emails you receive from Facebook aren't you? I get no emails at all, notifications go to my phone but they don't appear on my lock screen or make any noise, it just badges the icon so I can check in my own time.

Well tbh I don't use it much, so until spending a couple hours poring through the settings this afternoon, I wasn't aware.

I haven't deleted my account as a result, just removed all personal info, and everything from my timeline. Also could stop other people from posting on my timeline or (I think) from tagging me in their posts.

However everything I post on other people's pages is searchable by me and everyone else.

And everything on the site, every word and every picture, becomes the property of Facebook :p

I don't use it at all, neither does my girlfriend. I find no fun in social upkeep 24/7 personally.

You do realise you don't have to use it 24/7 - honest I kid you not.
I thought like others you had to be on it 24/7 and post stuff about what you are doing right now such as "Posting on OCUK again".
I have about 1 minute a day just to quickly see stuff and then come off.
My life changed when I knew that.

Would you believe they've got clinics in America for internet addictions like this?

Yeah, I had one in 2007, deleted in 2010. My main problem with FB is that I would PM old classmates; they never reply and yet they were happy to carry on with their OCD status updates. Very impersonal I found it. I wasn't even inviting randoms. I just wanted to treat FB like Friends Reunited and network with classmates, that was all. The final straw was while jobhunting. Instead of shortlisting me to an interview, one potential employer decided to send me an FB friend request. No guys, you use Linked In for professional stuff. My FB just had family photos

Yeah I know mate, but I see too many people who are on it day in and day out, at work, at college, at home. It's kind of disturbing really.
