If You Had £2k

Cant say I know much about them, but I know that my Girlfriend is paying like 25 quid a lesson and its dragging out. I think Id rather bomb £500 or however much it is and see if they can get my through.

Driving solid for a week or so is bound to be better than 1hr lessons every few days.

Gaining my driving license, although not so special now, was one of the best achievements of my life at the time. Certainly more vital than a laptop thats for sure!. opens up so many doors.

Could really do with driving now, I was looking at getting 2 lessons a week

I found it really helped spreading it out - meant I could go out with a relative for a drive too as a provisional, it's fantastic extra (and hopefully free) practice!

Of course, this depends on having someone willing to take you out.

Not learn to drive nor buy any new clothes :p

Then by all means spend some on clothes and driving lessons, but i'm afraid i'd not advocate spending the lot. As said above, it's good to have money put away for a real emergency.

As long as I had my own car my Dad was willing to take me out after I've had a couple of lessons

- I was going to put the 1.5k in the Bank and then as of when I want to buy a car I was going to spend the 1k but for the time being I would be getting some intrest

I have 2k but it has to go on repaying my student loans. then add another 4k to that. Ah well lucky I've got loads stashed away in a 'house deposit' fund currently accumulating.

I dont know the setup for the intensive courses but Im pretty sure some of them almost "guarantee" (not sure how this works) a pass at the end. Providing you arent some kinda tool Id imagine.

2 lessons a week at 20 quid + is just gonna whittle the money down. If you have a big wad of cash. Make the big one off payment and see how it goes.

I know that people in the RAF with me learned through the forces intensively and they got their licenses in a short time. Seemed a lot better than my old weekly lessons way when I learned.

Okay, as an extension of the whole car idea - can you afford to run it?

Going by your profile you're 17 - so even when you've passed, bought the car, and taxed/MOT'd it, you're still going to get bent over for insurance and fuel.

Learning to drive would be a much sounder investment. The MBP will be out of date in a few years, whereas your driving license stays with you for life and will open the door to better jobs meaning you can get the MBP in future :)

Getting a license is still well worth it. You are right though, a car is very expensive to run - a lot more so than you realise initially.

Go for the driving option.

At the moment, driving lessons are expensive at £25+ or more. When i did them it was £16.50 and if you pass your test it stays with you for the rest of your life. A laptop doesn't and only looks cool if you use it properly.

Dont get the car if you dont need it. If you are offered a good deal then get it.

I'd go for the driving course I think, I don't have the time for weekly lessons at uni, so learning in a week over the summer sounds perfect.

looks like ~£1000 for a novice like me.

I haven't had any lessons before, what would you recommend

Oh yes, i'd certainly get the licence and the clothes in his shoes (arf arf?), but I think getting a car would end up costing him well past the £2K, and even more as he starts putting fuel in it and maintaining it.

i'd save up another 3k and get this bad boy

I got my license when I was 19 and didn't start driving until very recently. It was well worth doing it when I was studying and had small outgoings.

It meant my insurance was cheaper, seems to drop when you hold a license for 3 years and that I was kind of out my LETS GIVE IT THE MESSAGE AND VOLLEY THE THROTTLE phase of days gone by.

I'd pay for flights for my MIL to come and visit her granddaughter who is 7 weeks old.
Between flights and visa's there would likely be little to nothing left from the £2K.
