If you had the money, what car would you buy?

First thing would be this:

It's probably useless, but I've loved the look of them for years. Very few, if any, cars look as good as that does to me.

hopefully the OP meant this thread to be a money no-object thread as that's what situation you'd need to be in to handle the e60 M5's never-ending ability to throw repair bills at it's owner.

Well, money no object, who'd care about the costs? :D

lol, i know what you mean, but i think that in a way the e60 M5 could damage and not enhance BMW's reputation. It's a great car but it's also an incredibly complex one at that, and there is a huge potential for something or other to break. I think these will end up as nightmare second hand cars once they're 7 or 8 years old or over 100k (which i believe Fox said renders them ineligible for the all singing all dancing BMW warranty)

I agree entirely.

Whilst I'd have few worries about a 100k+ e39 M5 (assuming said deep pockets!) An earlier e34 would worry me even less - On an e28, timing chain apart, Rust would be the only thing to really concern me about buying one.

Same could be said of the earlier vs later M3's too.

A 100k mile e30 is not beyond the scope of an average home mechanic in most departments, I wonder if the same will be said about the new V8 M3 and all of its electronic gizmo's?

Haha stumbled on this pic by accident, reading about a different topic altogether, but after seeing the same fat man lurking in the corner thought I'd post,

this was my first dream car, still want one!

one can only hope BMW go back to their roots a little for the next range of M cars.
Since the 60's BMW have been building cars at the forefront of modern technology and design. Unless you want them to build you a motorbike, producing the cars they do today is typical of BMW!

Several things, one of which would be a 22B, painted white (which might upset the enthusiasts slightly :o :D)

Hi there

It just that every new M car seems to get heavier and the steering is less responsive and has less feedback. For me one of the biggest complaints is the steering, there is pretty much no communication from the road at all in the E46 M3 and the press are reporting the new M3 to be no better. They are still great cars but there are better alternatives for people who want more of a drivers car. :)

as the future marches ever nearer, this is the way things are going. it won't be long before the driver looking for a real drivers car will only have 2 options.
either to modify an existing production car in a way that the manufacturer simply couldn't sell, or shop with a low volume manufacturer who isn't so strictly bound by the construction regs.

Italian style, American muscle :)

My first ever dream car, but apparently you need to be a tad on the smaller side to fit in one. Never had a chance to get in and find out if I'd fit though :(
