I bought a mate a bottle of 12yo Glenfiddich for Chrimbo (Probably what you snobs all cheap but $60aud is a lot for me to spend on booze! :p)

And he mixes it with ginger beer :o

It's all pot luck really, word of mouth can only go so far. :)

I love laphroaig but others would hate it.

What is your preference in tastes?

I like something smoky, or with a reasonably strong hint of something else in with it.

Im no expert at all but i dont mind spending a few quid investigating these things :)

Whisky and Ginger (not Bru) is quite a nice drink, great hair of the dog drink. Though, when I drink it I'll just use a cheap blend.
Same with whisky cocktails (Boston Sour, Old Fashioned), you wouldn't want to use a decent malt to make them; would just be a waste.

@Ahleckz - Hence my Canada Dry/Cream o' barley combo. Great for appetising multiple folks at a new year party or something.

@mark - Nothing smokier/peatier (which actually tastes good) than a laphroaig, it is too intense for some though.

I shall give that a go next, im sure i have had it before, but it was a while ago.

If he's not already tried it advise him to drink it on it's own, it's a good whisky and it'd be a waste to mix it, unless he doesn't like it neat.

If you prefer having subtle hints of other stuff, look for quarter cask laphroaig. It's great. Not too expensive either, £40 I paid I think.

Might be better off with ther std 10yo 1st mabye? the quarter cask is like the normal 10yo but stronger tasting.

the quarter cask is flippin' lovely though :)

It has 8% more volume but I found that it taste better with not a lot extra dough to hand over.

But even just trying a wee dram at a pub to see what it's like would be easier.

Canadian Club and a decent ginger ale (I prefer Schweppes for taste) is a fantastic easy drink on occasion but I'm sure Cream Of The Barley would be ok, I probably wouldn't drink that whisky straight up though.

Tastes good? It tastes like whisky but with added peat. :p

I don't think there's anything wrong with the £20-£30 bottles as long as they're single malts.

My favourites are the Islay malts like Jura and Laphroaig.

Definitely no ice though.
