If you were to build a uber graphics setup which platform would you use ?

As in the title if you were to build a 3 or 4 way card setup which platform would you use and why.

The above is a simple question but with a lot of things that need to be taken into account.

Depends on how freesync stacks up Tbh, if well, then a trio of 8gb 290x's, if poorly then 2 (or 3 depending how broken tri sli is atm) titan blacks on the green side.

The above is with an eye on 4k using respective adaptive sync monitors. Wouldn't be going near skinny Maxwell any time soon anyhow.

I saw the thread title and came in here to say "ask Kaapstad". If I was going 3 or 4 card I'd go for 980s purely on the basis of the lower heat output for case temps, and the lower wattage would also spare me the hassle of finding a PSU to power 4 250w cards. So less the actual performance of the cards and more the practicalities of cooling them. Also quadfire isn't very well supported with AMD drivers on most game launches.

If we ignored the practical side of it, I'm very much a fan of the 290x, and the 8gb cards would indeed be ideal for 4k as mentioned above.

If I was building something right now and had to be 3-4 way would probably be dual Titan Z on a X79 or X99 board.

Kind of glad I'm not having to build such a setup at the moment as the choices aren't great whichever side of the fence or not your on - AMD has the VRAM but dealing with the thermal and power requirements of quadfire is not for the faint of heart and from what I've seen tho the performance numbers on paper are good quite a few games have jerkiness in places on launch (and some take awhile to get fixed if ever) and a lot of nVidia cards fall down hard either due to VRAM bandwidth or amount even when the rest of the card is upto it.

Both, 2 nvidia titans in SLI and 2 AMD R9 290s in Crossfire.

Motherboard with PCIe switches, different windows installs. All the GPUs underwater on a single loop.

I barely have any need for more than 1 card so 2 would be my max. Plus I couldn't deal with all the drivers and games not being optimised for more than 2.

Cpu would be intel, x99, is a bit poor for overclocking apparently compared to bog standard haswell. So x79 might be the better bet. Gpu wise if money no object, 8gb 290's from amd. But, 4k gaming is years away for 99% of gamers, heck 2560x1440 is stretching things for a lot of users. Besides most of the so called 4k monitors people have now, arent even proper 4k2k screens, 3800 somewhat iirc yet they call it 4k. Get the sums right please and stop rounding things up to seem bigger than they are.

if 4k was my concern then 3 290x 8gb, i dont think i would be intrested in 4 cards as i feel 3 is the sweet spot for amd and nvidia

This really interests me as to which people would use, X79 or X99 and why.

Having said that it is also very interesting to see what GPUs people would use too and their reasoning.

X99 with a 5930K and 4 Titan Blacks or whatever nVidia release next in the big leagues. Nothing AMD has interests me at all.

Would wait for Titan 2 (or whatever the full fat cards will be called) and 3 or 4 of those on the X99 platform with the 5960X processor. Why? Well, not as techy savvy on hardware as most here I'm sure but firstly you get what you pay for (hence this is most expensive option?) and 2, as well as being up there on gaming performance it would also make one of the best all rounders too(8 cores).

Based on availability today, X99 5960X and 4 Titan blacks. If I was really spending my money though I would wait for next gen Titan

I simply wouldn't as unless you are looking at investing huge money into benchmark scores, or early adopters of managing fps at 4k, then no matter which way you look at it game-tech doesn't justify the expense of such a setup currently.

When games start to impress me then maybe, but for now I'm happy with
Elite dangerous on my 7950 at 1080p, the game play just does it for me, no ubisoft fixed style gameplay with a rebranded title, that i've shamelessly allowed myself to put up with during all the assassin creeds and watch dogs and facry's.

Guess I'm just reluctant to give away money, or just fed up with how few years back multiple screens were the selling point, (no thanks bevels), along with multiple cards, now we're starting to see single curved screens (which is great that's what I stated ''Stuff eyefinity multi monitors, as soon as panel manufacturers make curved screens at a good price i'm in, then it'll help open Elite up even more ).

edit forgot elite
