iLife update? not free?

and how many thousands of pounds is that going to be? ok i get the VAT off and its tax deductible but still... the iMac is gonna be in the region of a grand i think...

you see, if you're gonna say to me one and a half, i'd maybe consider it, but i know they're probably over 2, its just too damn much especially when i said that my macbook copes perfectly well with the stuff i do...

EDIT: just had a look at the current offerings and the processing power is superb but everything else is a bit pap...

Radeon 2600 XT / 8800 GT graphics? the PC i bought before my mac (so well over 2 years ago) was better than that... the ram would need to be upgraded after purchase due to the ridiculous margins they put on, same with the hard drives...

am i missing the point? i KNOW how powerful mac pros are but i don't see why they're so powerful on paper

I got iLife '09, but personally I think that iLife '09 is too expensive if you just upgrade from iLife '08.

Yes you are missing the point. The Mac Pro isn't a gaming machine, it's a number crunching beast and let us not forget that OS X offloads a lot of work to the GPU.

If you need a workstation then I'd recommend a Mac Pro. If you want to game go to OCUK.

That's true. However you CAN play the latest games with reasonable graphics settings, but it isn't designed for that task. For gaming, it's better to have a PC because all components can be upgraded.

I can get a gaming PC built myself from OCUK for around £500 (not including monitor) so I think the Mac Pro maybe a little expensive for just a gamig machine! :D

I'd bet a considerable sum of money that no-one posting in this thread 'needs' a mac pro as a workstation or otherwise.

This thread is about iLife. Now people who really need a Mac Pro are professional users that use stuff like Aperture, Logic Studio, Final Cut Studio and such, instead of iLife.

..which includes no-one posting in this thread, maybe even this forum.:)

It makes me laugh when people try to justify having a mac pro. 'Oh yeah, it's great watching a movie, using (my pirated) photoshop, and playing some game with no slow down...'

Tax deductable? Are you self employed or working through a Ltd. Company? If it's through a Ltd. then it specifically isn't tax deductable as it's a capital purchase? You'll still have to pay Corp. Tax on the on the money you use to buy it? Just curious what you mean. It's still cheaper of course as you don't pay the VAT and it's coming out of company money rather than your own taxable income (and of course you can write it down over time), I just wasn't sure what you meant by tax deductable.

As to 'needing' a MP - mine gets regularly caned with mutliple VMs for demo & development work and it isn't that hard to bring them to their knees. Saying that though, I use it because I haven't found a machine as capable yet - and because somebody else paid for it :)

Come on folks. Go to any photo/graphic design, film and video editing, studio recording, special effects or animation company and tell them how they don't need their Mac Pros and how £500 gaming PC from Orange Shirts can run their "pirated" Apertures, Final Cuts, Abletons, Logic Pros and Shakes.

In the meantime. iLife09, brilliantly priced to but new ($49), badly priced as an upgrade.

Actually what I said was that only people working in the industries you mentioned would need a mac pro and that I'd bet that didn't include anyone posting in this thread.

I've upgraded from iLife 08 to 09 and so far i'm impressed.

The face detection in iPhoto is brill and so is the ability to tag the places on a map (or if you have gps in your camera, its automatic). Gives you quite a bit to mess about with and creates a nice easy way to see all photos you have of a certain person or place. Also i'm pretty sure that facebook button wasn't there before? Thats quite a nice feature for Facebook users, you can click an event or multiple photos, click the facebook button et voila you have a new album on your profile.

After spending a whole day tagging photos (and videos), plotting them on a map, importing new albums etc... there are two things which i noticed. Importing seemed slower (slightly) and there was one face it just would not recognise no matter how many photos I tagged them in. Both minor things. I had to do the garage band update after I installed it but thats the only update so far.

I'm quite eager to check out the video stabilisation feature of iMovie too. My grandad takes his camera EVERYWHERE. He doesn't have the most stable of hands when filming either so will be good to see how well it copes with his videos. May post a reply if I happen to get it done anytime soon!

I wouldn't...

Mac Pro are professional users that use stuff like Aperture...

B'ah I run Aperture fine on my MacBook. Final Cut Studio may be a bit of a push. :)

Who's trying to justify having a Mac Pro? If they have the spare cash and have got one then good for them. I very much doubt they need to justify themselves to random forum dwellers.

Thanks for the good write up and welcome to the forums :)

Faces and the Image Stabilisation are the two features I am most looking forward to testing and playing with. Both of those looked damn impressive in the iLife demo videos.

Places looks good, but there is no way I am going to go through the 1000's of photo's I have applying where they were taken! I am sure it will be great when I get a GPS camera, but seeing that I have just bought a new point and shoot thats going to be a few years away. Are there many GPS camera's out yet?

Yeah, clever but the point I was made was that no kid computer geek here needs a mac pro. Suuuure, buy one if you've nothing better to do with your money such as, for example, move out of your parents or get a girlfriend.

How can you assume that everyone on here is a kid computer geek?

I don't know many kids who could afford a £3000 machine :p

I didn't know you owned a mac pro and my point remains that no one here needs one because they're all hobbyists rather than professional users.
