iLife update? not free?

I don't know anything about the actual needs of the posters here. But the thing you point out is the same in just about every hobby.

See all the schmoes toting high-end Canon/Nikon DSLRs and lenses despite being low-end photographers.

We'll convince LordSplodge to edit it to: "If you want a workstation then I'd recommend a Mac Pro" and let's be done with thread de-railing? ;)

..which includes no-one posting in this thread, maybe even this forum.:)

I wouldn't be so sure of yourself on this front. I don't have a MP (yet) but I am a professional, I do use one at work and if I consider getting a desktop in the future it will be a MP.

As for iLife I might be tempted to upgrade if they add Snow Leopard to the current OSX/iLife/iWorks bundle they are doing, otherwise I don't think I really need it. Adobe Creative suite kind of replaces everything in iLife. (Legally bought i might add likwid. ;))

I tried iPhoto 09 and was disappointed with the Faces feature. Granted I need to improve my photo organization but for the majority of my photos, it just wouldn't recognize people consistently.
For young people that went to Uni etc, I imagine, like mine, that most of your photos are in dark places like pubs, clubs etc with people pulling funny faces etc. It certainly does not deal with these types of photos. My graduation photos, where everyone is standing in a line smiling, it recognized everyone so I cant complain about that.

Iphoto doesn't recognise the faces of people who are pulling faces in the dark? That is really disappointing! :)

I had to set the faces manually at every photo (775 photos in my library). It only detected the face of my bird (cockatiel) :D

You aren't supposed to go through every picture tagging people that it doesn't find.

The idea is; you tag "John" and it suggests pictures that it thinks John is in. Your job then is to tell iPhoto if it's correct or not. It will gradually get better each time it successfully finds John.

By tagging every picture you don't give the app a chance to "learn" the faces.

Cockatiel huh? Is that Hungarian? :p
lol, no it's an Australian bird :D

I know, but it never shows any suggestions....

I have been using iPhoto 09 fine for the last few weeks but my brother has just upgraded his mac to 09 and has found that it does not work if your iPhoto library is on a NAS! Apparently the Apple forums are full of complaints about the problem and he is pretty narked as it has always worked fine.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

(The reason his library is on a NAS is because they have 3 macs in his family and they want all the photos in a secure centralised location).

Are you trying to suggest multiple people to the iPhoto application?

I.e Clicking pic001 and selecting "john" then clicking pic002 and selecting "lucy" etc?

I've heard reports that it "learns" quicker if you stick to one person at a time

I never tried that. Just multiple people at the same time...

I don't know for anyone else, but for me at least i've found quite regularly after i've gone through all of the suggestions for a person i'll move onto another person and have a picture of the previous person suggested for the current person

In my experience Faces is barely usable if left to auto-detect faces. I suppose it'll all depend on the types of photos, the lighting, the angle and such but for me at least it kinda sucks.
