numbers will be gained from application formsm, and language skills are integral are integral to many of the kinds of visas! Throwing people out is difficult and is often very expensive!
I don't know about you, but I've never put my mobile number down once, mainly to avoid marketing texts. Ok now I don't own a mobile phone, but if I did, I wouldn't. :p

Do you really think anyone coming into the country with the intention to stay illegally is going to put down a correct number?

Isnt the suggestion that its there to help people who inadvertantly overstay their visa?

I dont think anyone is claiming that it will stop those who intend to stay illegally.....

I'm not even sure why we have this problem in the first place.

Aren't they supposed to seek refuge in the first safe country they come to?

So we should only be taking in Spanish, French, Norwegian, Danish, and Dutch, surely?

Not when they are refused refuge in all that stands between us and their country of origin.

Besides, that's only the layman logic that they should seek refuge in the first safe country they can get to, the reality is thye can pick and choose as they please.

yes, but that's only for asylum seekers, who dont get issued visas that need renewing (if they are granted refugee status), others such as students, spouses, highly skilled migrants etc do need to renew.

It's slightly more than layman logic. in theory, if they were able to claim refuge as they passed through France to get here but didn't, i *think* they can be removed to France on that basis (don't quote me though I can't remember the specifics)

No its not - here's a boat and an oar / off you go . . . . . . . . . .

If only! I read somewhere that it costs 4 figure amounts to remove a single person!

Money well spent. Think about what we would save from removing these scrotes from the country.

Yes, it would only cost a mere four billion pounds (plus a bit) and they'd all be gone! It's so simple and cheap!

No to the first question.

Reid is pretty much claiming that is he not? From the BBC article in the opening post:-

to text there friends saying come to England, free house, furnishing, car, job, life, pension, food, drink, etc blah blah.. the normal every day things most of us have to work our dangly things off for.

That is the thought that made me fail my General Studies Exam in Janurary.

I couldn't agree more.

We'd see that money back within months from not having to pander to their every wish.

If they already have their phone numbers, they can actually track the position if the phones (and the owners), arrest them, and deport them! Simple. Perhaps they should do this the day after the text. :D Infact, why not instead of the text.

couple of these on our end of the channel tunnel would work wonders!

Actually it's a yes to the first question. The part of the article you qouted is in reference (or should be) to them making it possible to fine landlords who rent to illegals, and other things to allegedly make it harder for them to stay.

Well as said, it's only really gonna work for the people who inadvertantly overstay, there are many who don't realise they have to, or don't realise that it needs to be done before it expires. It is astonishing (but frequently occurs) that some people enter into this kind of thing without researching the processes, the costs, and what they are bound to by law! I know if I was moving to another country, I would want the facts BEFORE I did anything! I don't think anyone (in authority at least) is suggesting that the text idea is going to do anything with regards to the people who purposefully set out to circumvent the system in any way.
