Shed full of bodges - £1000

That would have been a good deal with all the panels etc - £461

About as cheap as it gets £285

Before you think about buying a project like that, do some serious research into panel prices etc - pick up stuff is very rare. A full resto, if you knew how to weld well and spray would cost you upwards of €3000 to do it properly. If you couldnt weld or spray, double or treble that figure!

I nearly bought a pickup that was in pretty good nick up north 3 years ago for £1000. Found out I couldnt get insured on it. I wish I had now, because it'd be worth a fortune!

The vans are a nice compromise - decent projects going for about £500. There's also another way, to buy a clubman estate - Most expensive I've ever seen one sell for is £1500 and that was an absolute minter with 20k miles and no rust. Pick up a decent one easily for £6-700 and then convert to a van. Get one that's over 30years old, and you're looking at €50 tax, no nct and dirt cheap classic insurance ;)

Edit - how cool is that - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1982-AUSTIN-M...613531506QQcategoryZ43123QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Id probly end up paying max of 1500 sterling. Maybe less.
Might be a better idea buying a a mini van and choppin the back actually.

Nope - dont do that. I've seen it done and it looks awful, you can tell straight away its a van. Also, you cant do that to a van!

£1500 would get you a project that needed lots of new panels but was probably mechanically sound. Or else a project that was in pieces but had had all the welding done.

Its a while off yet so Ill make my mind up in summer, Ill stick to one beast at a time ( im sure i could make up moulds for panels if i got a good(ish) one, a plastic mini  haha she'd fly)

are domino cars still in business?
if so try them.

Ah cool, I knew someone would be making shells. Pity they might be out of business.

I hear they are quite *ahem* nippy. After seeing the 1.6 Dohc Civic engine in one I was bloody amazed (makes me wonder about that B16a engine sitting in the shed:D)

there were at least two companies making fibre shells, although i can only remember Domino.
i have to say though that their product was of very good quality and not some shoddy heap of cack.
if my memory is working correctly we're talking less than a grand for the shell.not bad when you consider how much prepration a rusted metal car will need to take paint.

Jesus that is a fair price alright. Pity they didnt make a pick up shell. I'll do a quick google to see what I can find.

Domino did make a pick up shell, but it was quite obviously not an original pick up. It had thicker door steps, no external hinges, and a longer load bay. Pretty cool way to get a rust free Mini.

I was looking at them a while back, and yes you can have a pretty cheap pick up, but it wouldn't be a proper one!

true, and it was also de-seamed......but then that's a mod that a lot of owners go for anyway.
IMHO you either go 100% authentic,or you mod as you like.

Very few people deseam pickups - it's just sacrilage!

Deseamed saloons arent really that popular either, as it's pretty hard to do a good job, and it can also look pretty pants.

Id be a more of a mod as you like kidna guy.
The fiberglassed mini pickup, while nice just doesnt sit right. Just a little too long for me really. Saying that though, id be happy with either of them.

Update on the Pop, noy sure if Ill be getting my dads one, so ill be looking to get my own. I was told id be looking at 500+ sterling which aint too bad at all really for what I need.

I'm a mod as you like guy too, I like to make something my own, but there are certain cars that you cant rape with mods and the pickup is one imho!

I want a standard looking pickup in red with loadbay cover, a 1430cc powerplant (about 110 (reliable & useable) bhp), fully sorted suspension, 4-pots up front and running on 10s - that's the dream

Nope - Minis have seams that stick out between the panels - you can see them here:
side2.jpg

The guttering is also considered a seam

Whatever you do - dont do this:

incase anyone is wondering...yes it IS a bad idea to remove the guttering, even if you de-seam the rest of the car.
getting wet everytime you open the door gets real old, real quick.
