I'm buying a MSI 7970 Lightning this friday and need help.

Can someone clear this up, as this thread has been a little confusing.

On his psu there is

1 pcie- 6 pin
1 pcie- 6+2 pin

On the adapters you get with the lightning there is a black wire which loops into another pin, i am presuming this is to give extra power. Otherwise why would they place 2 of said adapters in the box.
Will post a picture if it helps.
And if it were to work, and you got one, i'd advise not to overclock it until you got a replacement psu.

Cammy said this one would be best. Anyways I'm not getting the 7970 lightning now. msi 7950 tfiii I just bought, but like everyone said here I needed a new psu. I'll be happy with the 7950 until late next year and then I'll get a 8000 series card.

If you now gone 7950 you could have stuck with your existing psu as that msi 7950 tf3 has one 8pin and one 6pin connection.

I'd have gone for a modular psu personally - don't think your case has cable management so could be a little messy.

Fully modular = way more money

OP has already had to cut down from a 7970 lightning to a 7950 due to needing a psu.

If he went fully modular he would be getting a 8800 gtx or something ;)

This is the best psu there is for the money mate.I have a fully modular and it cost £210 (its xfx aswell)

He doesnt have one 8 pin!!

he has one 8 pin plug with 6 cables coming out of it. That is not an 8 pin supply rated at 150 watts.

With the new psu now OP is future proof. At least for the time being anyway ;)

Thanks cammy. so now that the new psu is coming. I'll have the proper cables for the msi tfiii 7950. Does the msi7950 have 1 6pin to 8pin in the card box? or is does the psu have the cables for this one I'm getting?

This 7950 does 1 6pin and 1 8pin.

Thanks again my friend:)

So do you mean that 6+2 pin cable only has 6 pins going into the psu?

That psu has 2 x 6 pin and 2 x 8 pin for pci express so you could buy another 7950 for crossfire and not need any adaptors.

As I said last night its 1 large rail instead of many so the whole 650 watts is on 1 rail so your not going to overload it unless you exceed 650 watts.

You have 110% done the right thing changing that ocz psu ;)

EDIT. In answer to your question the 7950 may have an adaptor in the box but leave it there you dont need it ;-)

Bit over the top.

The difference between the 7970 lightning and the TF 7950 is £110,

Could easily get a decent modular psu for less than that.

Doesn't need to be fully modular, just saves having tonnes of sata connectors and stuff blocking airflow. Even something like this which is practically the same price: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-018-SS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

I only have maybe £65 to £70 to spend If I have too?

The psu you have spec'd is only 550 watts where as the xfx one is 650 watts.

To get the same 650 watt seasonic you have spec'd its £95.

OP said he wanted to spend £65-£70 and was spec'd the best psu there is for £70.

At time of spec also the OP was buying this in addition to the 7970 lightning

Wouldn't think a lightning would be needing more than 550 though, i'd rather have a modular with a little less power tbh.

Although like you listed i'd rather spend another £30 for a higher power modular, psus are things you rarely ever need to upgrade especially if they are good quality.

Just if I had £380 total to spend and I needed a new psu i'd get the best one available to me. Where everyone differs I guess.

remember though the xfx is a seasonic unit.

The only issue is its not modular which just takes a bit more time on install to get any excess cables out the way.

I agree with you If it were me Id want modular or part modular but for £70 which is what was requested id much rather have a rock solid non modular than a not so good part modular based on equal wattage output

Yeah I guess so.

It's just if he was willing to spend £380 on a card and the TF 7950 is around £260 i'd definitely use that other amount for a psu, such a vital component and last way longer than a graphics card.

My current modular psu is nearly 4 years old, i've had about 5 gpus in that time. :p
