This is the most confusing thread I have ever read![]()
+1
Some of the advice is shocking in here as well.
(i.e. the get moar watts scaremongers)
SLI 680's overclocked with an i7 3770K @ 4.4 Ghz - 450-500W from the wall.
I see you have a 750 watt xfx even though your 450-500w from the wall
650 watts for what was going to be a 7970 lightning plus the rest of his rig isnt overkill or scaremongering! Is it?
Right, first point: it's 'you're'
Considering most people believe that PSU's shouldn't be ran at close to max load then 450-500W (peak) on a 750W unit is about right.
I'm not sure why you've taken exception to my post: I don't think recommending a 650W PSU over a 600W quantifies as scaremongering but OK if you feel the need to defend your recommendation when no-one is questioning it.
Pulling me up for you're is just petty and makes you come across as a fud.
I didnt take exception to your post mate but you saying the advice has been shocking certainly for anything I have said isnt the case.

I'm not getting the 7970 lightning now. I decided because I needed a new psu and money was tight so didn't have enough so I went with the msi 7950 tfiii instead. If my mate can't fit the new psu for me I might give it a go. how hard can it be? I just have to plug everything back in then cable tie up all the rest.
i know but threads are to help others as well as yourself, posted the pictures incase some one can say what the little loop wire does, is it a ground or to provide extra power???
the extensions you get with the lightning
the other thing that will really help in future is people knowing that dodgy OCZ PSU's have 8-pin connectors with 2 pins not actually wired up (which is quite frankly shocking!)
Some of it is shocking I didn't actually say who it was so I'm not sure what your issue is.
In fact I just read and cringed without taking it in.
Was the 6+2 pin connector definitely only 75w capable?
I thought the two extra pins on an 8pin pci-e were just grounds..
that can't be right either - unless they are admitting that the 8-pin connectors are just for show and really it only needs 6-pin ones
normally a 6-pin to 8-pin converter uses 2 6-pins in to get one 8-pin out
I am going to jump in here without reading further (for now). I have SLI 680's and one 680 is connected to the 2*8 pin connectors I have coming from my PSU. I have 2 more PCI-E connectors and they are only 6 pin. Therefore I purchased 2 bitfenix braided 6 to 8 pin cables to be able to connect my other 680. I have them massively overclocked and have no problems.
Somebody will probably tell me to bin my PSU and get a PSU with 4*8 pin connectors but I will ignore and stay as I am.
(just using your point for reasoning Optima)![]()
