I’m new to pc building and need some advice on the parts I’ve picked.

Hi everyone! Like the post says I’m brand new to pc building. I like how my list of parts is looking and I’ve put a good amount of time into research, but I’d still appreciate some advice since there’s a good chance I’m missing something.

List of pc parts:

Cpu: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core Processor.

Cpu cooler: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 360 A-RGB 48.82 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler.

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard.

RAM: G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory

SSD: Lexar NM790 w/Heatsink 4 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive.

GPU: Asus TUF GAMING OC GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16 GB Video Card.

Case: Fractal Design Pop XL Air ATX Full Tower Case.

PSU: MSI A1000G PCIE5 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply.

OS (probably doesn’t matter lmao but anyway): Microsoft Windows 11 Home Retail - USB 64-bit.

Monitor: Alienware 27 inch AW2725DF Gaming Monitor | QD OLED | 2560x1440 | 360Hz | 0.03ms | USB-C, 2x DisplayPort, HDMI, 4x USB.


So there’s all the parts. I have a few questions too. I’ll just note too that I know there is a few cheaper options for some parts but I wanted to go with something reliable that I heard was good and premium and luckily it hasn’t affected the budget.

I’ve gone for the RTX 4070 ti super, I can afford a 4090 but with the 1440p monitor and games I’ll be playing it seemed overkill to me so please let me know what you think. The only games I play really are Fortnite and Minecraft (Minecraft will end up pretty modded if that matters) but I might end up wanting to play something more AAA. With the GPU & CPU I’ve picked out I’ve seen Fortnite gameplay at 500fps, 1040p so I think it’ll reach the 360fps cap for the monitor.

Another question is what is a good surge protector? It seemed a bit confusing so I thought I’d ask here.

And last question is do you have any recommendations for fun pc accessories? This will be my first pc and I want to go all out. I’m not really too big on RGBs but anything else would be great!

Joystick, steering wheel and ehsnout 5.1 speaker system?
Playing games would be interesting without a keyboard and mouse eh

Might need some thermal compound unless the HSF has a pad or pre applied

Yeah a nice speaker system would be awesome! I don’t think a joystick or wheel are for me really but I’ve found this cool ‘left hand mouse’ thing called an azeron keypad that looks really nice.

A couple of things do stick out though.


Are you sure you want a full tower case?


Get the drive with no heatsink as the motherboard has built in heatsink plates.

It is more than fine for 1440p, no issue there. Don't pay too much for it though, because the 4080 Super is available for not much more than some of the premium models.

From a brief look it seems like quite a lot more for 10-15% better stats. I might as well go for the 4090 for the price by the looks of it, which I am thinking about but I couldn’t find any meaningful info on what to get. Do you have any recommendations for the 4090? I’ve heard some can have bad coil whine, warranties, melting issues, etc which has made it difficult to decide.

TPU's GPU database has the 4080 Super as 18% faster in raster (to the 4070 Ti Super) and if you pay e.g. £800-£850 for a more premium model of the 4070 Ti Super, then you can get a Zotac 4080 Super for £900 from OCUK right now, so in that case the 4080 Super is a better deal (..though putting "better deal" and a nearly £1K GPU in a sentence is amusing).

That was my concern really, if you were paying for a premium model, since if you get a decent price on the 4070 Ti Super then it is fine (apart from it performing similarly in raster to a 7900 XT, that you can get for just over £600).

As for the 4090, TPU have that as 24% faster than a 4080 Super or 46% from a 4070 Ti Super and the price is roughly 90% or 130% higher respectively (depends on the model), so that one gets a no from me.

Thank you for the info! I’ve upgraded to the Zotac 4080 Super now. I was tempted by the 24% increase tbh but after looking at the prices again I said no as well

Hi.

If you can afford it I would stretch to a motherboard with pcie5 while not really relevent at the moment may become so later , especially as AMD are known for long term platform support.

Thank you for the recommendation! This one looks great and has good reviews. I’m not knowledgeable enough on computers to know if this thing I heard from someone really matters so I thought I’d ask.

“According to it, populating the 2nd gen5 NVMe slot will make the 1st PCI-E gen5 slot max out at 8x. So, while it technically still is a gen 5 slot, it ends up support "only" gen4 x16 bandwith.”

Probably not important but thought I’d ask. I did also see something about not having the most stable internet connection.

Yes that's correct if you get a pcie5 m2 which are quite expensive ATM but having options is what it's about. Most bugs on these boards have been sorted but with the release of x870 motherboards they have pcie5 anyway so it mite be worth looking into that if you interested.
