Yet if I'm on Zoom calls, I can always tell who is on wifi and who isn't. The best wifi in the world will never, ever beat a proper cabled connection, period.

No you can't. You can tell if someone has a poor WiFi or internet connection but you're talking out of you bum if you think working in tech somehow makes you able to tell how someone is connected to their network from a video call.

I've got WiFi 6 in my office, I get 600mbps from speedtest.net on my phone.

Normies having an issue is almost always WiFi, I would concede on that point.

But generally folk with good WiFi are indistinguishable in 2023.

It is just the people using the tat Sky send out who are clearly bottom rung.

Cardinal sin right there. Dog on the bed eeewww! Hell, even the sofa is bad enough.

I know you love your dog mate, but don't love your dog.

As long as we're in agreement that you're wrong that's all that matters. :p
Except, based on my experience, I'm not. I don't recall one time when someone's audio or video has ended up like a robot and I've asked if they're on wifi and they aren't. Once they connect to a cable, it all magically works. The problem with wifi is that the vast majority have their ISP piece of junk in one corner of the house and sit at the other trying to do work calls. Not many have bothered investing in a proper mesh system or APs.

I get where you're coming from but I think it would be more accurate to say that when people have observable issues you can almost always be certain they are on WiFi and not cabled in. That's not quite the same as being able to tell those who are on WiFi and those who are not.

I think this is the point. You're suggesting, even on a call when everyone looks great, you can tell who is on WiFi and who isn't?

Also, some of my colleagues insist on going through the work VPN, which is terrible. That's a bigger issue than WiFi for most of my team! They can be wired in and still have massive delays/loss of video.

You couldn't tell between someone on good WiFi and cable I can guarantee you that, I can max out my connection on WiFi and my latency is 6ms avg. Obviously the people that are having issues have bad WiFi, or low bandwidth and a partner sat on Netflix.

They won't cos this costs money. People want the cheapest option and don't give a damn - until something doesn't work correctly.

Because for the majority it doesn’t really warrant the spend.

I’ve had properly setup mesh in my house using Unifi stuff and I’m now using the Sky router with no noticeable issues.
I still get 60mbs in the shed across the garden and the same in the other side of the house through 60cm thick walls.

The supplied stuff just seems a lot better these days through the technology trickling down.

Doesn't take much to get WiFi that's indistinguishable from wired. Especially in regards to teams calls etc.

Obviously if people have a poor setup with poor kit setup is to blame. But wifi isn't to blame. Wifi is more than capable now of all but the most niche set ups.

Same can be said for wireless Bluetooth coming on leaps and bounds. I was staunch advocate of wired headphones. And for a long time they were better. But in end I got a. Pair of xm4s and haven't gone back. They are still not as good as best wired.. But they are better as a package. No wire to worry about basically.

Sometimes raw performance being better does not make the entire solution better.
