I don't think it's ugly at all, quite the opposite. In a world where cars are increasingly turning in to samey samey boxes of dull a fresh car like the Cactus really stands out.

it should be green with a name like that!!! my old Audi is nicknamed the cactus due to the colour code

I can understand if they're cheap and easy to replace, im sure in car parks doors might open into the side of your car, so it sort of makes sense if that is the use for it.

The side panels are actually little airbags, so if some tool clashes doors in the car park there's no damage caused.

They're not airbags that explode outwards, like the ones to protect the occupants inside the car. They are plastic panels with air pockets inside them to provide some protection against everyday knocks and bumps.
