In my opinion, a bad move. Virtually every film i've watched within the past 15 years has been followed up by scouring IMDB for information. I usually gain more insight from the user comments, questions and opinions found on each film or actor's mini board page than the IMDB listing itself.
Apparently, the majority of their users will be happy to use the IMDB page of Facebook (only useful for everything current and newsworthy within the past week). How on earth does that compare to being able to comment on a film i watched at 2am last week, made in 1971 and is really obscure?
I guess it doesn't make money for Amazon since they took over the site.
EDIT -sorry for the so called clickbait title. I can't edit it. Edited for you - Muban

Op you have the wrong end of the stick. Its the message board, nothing more you can still rate.
And really doesn't matter, who uses the message board anyway, probably why they're closing it.

The IMDB boards were pretty good up till about 2008 but since then it's become mostly redundant.
The Horror section was particularly handy for unearthing rare and obscure gems though with quite a few knowledgeable posters.

I logged on last night and was greeted with that message. I always use the message boards, very very rare I post but if I do I always get a good reply. I have not seen that much crap on there but you do get some. I guess it depends on what board you're viewing. The trivia, production notes etc I ALWAYS look at so I will be thankful they are not going.

Can you see the message boards in mobile format?

I never posted on the message boards but I would occasionally browse. I liked the fact that any kind of inquiry you might have e.g theories on plot/interpretation would normally have been discussed already. I think it is a shame that they are getting rid of them. Can't be a cost issue, must be a risk thing to avoid hassle of being responsible for the moderation.

Seems like a big mistake to me as a lot of people only visit due to the message boards. I wonder if they mistakenly only counted users who post as people who use the boards forgetting about the large amount who read only.

I doubt it. Obviously they can see who visits what and you have to think it's a small percentage. Even in this thread I think we can see more people didn't even know it existed, then people that used/visited it.

If anything they should have been making the message boards more visible. The moderation aspect seems like a bit of a cop out. From a business point of view I would have thought having people making repeat visits to the site for messages would bring in more advertising revenue. For example how successful would Facebook be if it was just a database of personal profiles without people talking to each other?
