IMDB removing message boards from their site

Idiots. They should have outsourced the message board to separate site, hire community moderators, add ads, split boards by language, it would pull more money than static IMDB pages and have more real traffic.

I'm really going to miss them. Yes, there can be a lot of rubbish there but it's the first place I go after watching a film to read the discussions. I don't understand how they can claim that their social media is a good alternative.

Every film, every TV show, every single person listed on IMDB has their own message board. This is a massive mistake on their part, there is simply no alternative, anywhere.

Exactly. From an armchair CEO perspective they should have been raising the profile of the forums and not the opposite, in order to harness the 70 million registered users. Unless they have some other unannounced plan, I think they will miss out on the lack of social. Instead they will be limited to people who visit for the odd titbit of information and then disappear for the next week/month/year.

Just noticed this today. Kind of gutted really, I almost always browse them after watching a movie to see others thoughts etc. Is there any kind of alternative out there?

+1 , I tend to have a look at the board for a film Iam interested in

Most people will post pretty honest views on films warts n all

Now without that IMDB will be more sanatised

I do say why they have done this, amazon now make movies so they want
more control on what people say about them, especially if its poop

I use them all the time after I watch a film or TV show.

Yes there's a lot of dross but also a lot of interesting stuff as well.

Shame they're going.

Can't really see me visiting the boards much once the forums go. Imo it was the best part of it for the reason Kelt mentioned above.

A big loss, they are a main reason I visit the site.

Again, it could only be 3 or 4% based on what people are replying here. That probably doesn't count as a large drop. And again, I'm sure IMDB will know exactly how many visits are to the message boards and think it's an acceptable drop, so can't be much.

Seems to be a a fair bit more than 3-4% judging by the posts so far.

Shame to lose them for sure! I always give them a browse after watching a new film or TV series.

As mentioned there's a lot on there which is really interesting if you're prepared to take the rubbish that does crop up.

I wonder if Amazon will at least keep a backup of them which they could reinstate down the line?

Only because the title has now been changed. When it was the silly, ridiculous title, any IMDB users came in here and clearly the vast majority had no idea the message boards even existed.

I'm quite disappointed by this, I like to check the boards after the latest episode of a show has aired, and I post the odd thread asking a question about a film/show. Like most people have guessed, I think it's due to it being a loss maker for Amazon since they haven't been able to monetize it properly.

I think Reddit may also have stolen a lot of traffic, since I see a lot of activity there for Vikings at least.

I am disappointed the board is going down.
I liked to read opinions of the general public about programmes and movies; not just rely on professional critics.
I don't think I will use imdb much now.

Huge disappointment. That's pretty much the only reason i went there. That and to take 2 seconds to rate a film.

Films i didn't understand, or wanted more ideas about, is why i went to their forums. Shame.

Must be more to it than the reasons they give.

Well, it's finally happened. The IMDB message boards are no more. However, i may have found something of interest to those who have stated that they will miss them.

http://www.moviechat.org/

I stumbled across this new site by reading a user comment on a 600+ reply posting on the IMDB Facebook page, of all places.

Moviechat.org claims to have archived the IMDB message boards although it is still an ongoing process. I've searched for some obscure titles and so far, i can view all of the user comments for that title. It also looks like new messages can be posted although i haven't registered to enable that.

hth

That might explain why there have been the odd error over the last couple of weeks - If someone's been completely archiving everything, that could have put quite a load on IMDB.

i found the boards extremely useful. i typically watch a film, then go on imdb to read the trivia as well as the message boards. great way to get things clarified or see views you'd never thought of. i ond't mind it going but i would like if there was a replacement. the boards were bound to fail when they are put right at the bottom of the page, with old forum software. reading them was terrible on a pc and worse on a phone. you could only view around 20 threads at a time, then if you selected to view the second set of 20, viewed 1 thead and then went back, it went back to showing the first set again. was a right pain in the butt and really needed upgrading rather than removing.
