IMPORTANT: Members Market access

Sounds like another way of saying 'People whose primary usage of the forum is trading on MM rather than being an active member of the forum community'

Why not argue the MM needs a continuous influx of good people to make it the thriving market place it used to be?

Denying reasonable access to punish the few makes for a declining MM.

I understand there are logistics and dangers from would be crooks and I trust it can be made to work best as resources allow.

Because it's there to be a perk to community members to buy and sell to each other, not to be a 'thriving marketplace' for traders to make use of.

This is basically it.

The current post count rules have been in place for over 10 years, that's 10 years in which some people have not managed an average of one post per week outside of MM whilst using it, in some instances very heavily.

The original reasoning behind even having an MM was that it would be a place where people who had shown themselves to be part of the community could trade with other members of that community.

When we looked at the numbers after we'd had several "grandfathered" accounts hacked we were surprised at how many people had access under the old rules and had not posted/logged in for over a year, and how many had access but it seemed had barely posted outside of it since gaining access.

I agree that selfish traders are a problem. It's frustrating when I see genuine good people miss out on something they have been looking for by a few hours because they were not as reactionary as the selfish traders.

Am I wrong to argue for a thriving marketplace?

Isn't there something about good people far outnumber bad people?

How about allowing an influx of good community members to support a thriving marketplace like it used to be?

Oh give over, your making me emotional.

The MM is a privilege, not a right. We can remove access to whom ever we want. And we certainly don't need your approval.

I agree! I'm arguing for a thriving MM rather than it being strangled because of a few bad actors who take advantage of the good people who give away their items cheaply while trusting it's going to a good cause.

There is nothing preventing good community members taking part now or in the future, so all good.

If it doesn't 'thrive' with just the participation of active community members, then evidently it wasn't really working as a community perk so much as a little trading post for a bunch of 'inactive' people trading anyway - in which case it would be no great loss to the community either.

I think it's overcomplicating the matter to talk about who's being generous or how good the deals are - those are definitely in "perk" territory. At the end of the day, access is restricted via certain policies and the policies need to stand. Just so happens that there was a period where grey area took over and led to a not insignificant number of dodgy situations.

I remember when I was a relative youngster buying and selling on the MM. It was a thriving place! It was full of good people unlike today where it's kinda heading towards being a ghost town by comparison.

Am I nostalgically wrong?

I remember back when this place began and how it was a great place to engage with like minded people and perhaps it was partly because it had a reasonably easy to access MM.

People are posting that they accept that in their lifetime they'll never have access to the MM!

The good people retrospectively punished and those being denied access due to draconian rule, need an argument, and it seems like I am it.

Anyone who reaches the required criteria will be able to access the MM.

Just like it's always been. All we've done is remove those who aren't good community members. To be part of the community, you need to participate in it.

By removing those who don't participate in the community, we've done exactly what you've asked for. You want good community members to be able to access the MM, we've removed those who aren't good community members.

I feel like I am being punished, have been here since 2004 and visit these forums several times a day, I am not comfortable posting willy nilly unless I have something worth saying to contribute to a given topic, I do read plenty but alas only actually had something worth saying 308 times, plus the 2 times on this topic which for some reason are not added to my tally.
I have been part of this community for 19 years and a customer for 20 years plus.

Access to MM is a benefit of being a valued member to the forums. 100 posts in GD and 3000 in MM was taking the mickey (and there's a significant number of people like that who are posting in this thread too).
I'd consider someone with a large post count and good rating in the mm as far more valuable member than some of the endless trolling and culture war nonsense that fills these forums.

If anyone hasn't made the cut , just go derail every thread in Music Tv etc calling everything woke , or join the 3 posters endlessly throwing the same argument at each other in what to do about dogs. In a short space of time you are now a valued member of the community.

So I am no longer a good member of this community?
I was acceptable when I posted to get to the 250 required back then.

To be part of the community you must participate. Get active and you’ll be back in before you know it :)

The alternative way to look at that is that you've leeched off the community for years, only actively participating in it to buy cheap stuff / offload your second hand stuff and asking for free PC game giveaways more than you've been able to conjure up the enthusiasm to engage in 'life' forum discussions or post in the technical help sections.

There's so many diverse topics on these boards beyond arguing about whether films are woke or circular arguments about whether dogs should be banned, it's hard to believe someone genuinely interested in being part of the community can't find somewhere on the forum they feel like they have something to say a couple of times a week.
