So im in a Zombie mood atm and need the following answered if im able to continue my escape plans:

*This is based on normal standard Zombies ie Dawn of the Dead, Walking Dead seem normal.... no specials or anything, just slow walkers that eat us*

Anyway;

1 - Zombie strength, everyone seems to have to tussle in hand to hand with a single zombie. Now what is their muscle strength like, is it as it would be OR are they given a bonus now they are the walking dead. Obviously pain in non existant so they can continue to come at you, where as if you took a slice to the leg you would be hampered... so whats the deal here?

2 - Swimming. If im being chased by a herd of Zombies, could I run into the sea/even swim out to sea and the Zombies would either a) follow me and drown or b) are clever enough to stop and wait at shore? OR can they swim and if so, does breathing become a factor for them?

3 - What senses do Zombies work off? Sight obviously, sound.... can they distinguish sounds, or are they just attracted to them? Smell... can they smell humans?

I think thats it atm, should give me enough to work with.

I reckon strength wise they're pretty strong. Because they have no pain or sense of self preservation I reckon they have the undead equivalent of retard strength.....

And even though they don't feel pain, you can still do enough mechanical damage to restrict their movement.

Wow, I must be bored!! :D

In regards to the swimming, IIRC, in 'World War Z' didn't the UN have to deploy troops to sort out the zombies that were walking out of the sea. As, being dead and all, they just shuffled along the sea floor.

Correct. If you had read The Zombie Survival Guide before World War Z like you should have you would've already known that.

:p

I think they'd be strong for a while, but surely after a few weeks or so they'd be decomposing even more and therefore getting weaker? Depends on the age of the corpse really, I don't think you'd have a problem with zombies rising from graves. Problem is when there's a full scale infection (I Am Legend style) and the bodies are relatively fresh and strong. Especially if they're technically just mutated and not undead.

Swimming has been sorted out.

I'd imagine all, except maybe touch (they don't feel pain) and taste, but they don't really need them. I'd imagine all of their senses would be slightly dulled though, once again depending on the age of the decomposing corpse.

I've often thought about how to escape a situation with zombies attacking. Generally it's just a very small group of zombies, which I think would be fine. Once you get on to the full scale zombie invasion, that's when it becomes a problem and you better hope you can find a gun.

Im going to order that book.. however the swimming point, im assuming as you mention that they just walk into the sea without reprecussion.

However surely currents etc would stop them walking on the sea bed? Fish predators?

In Land of the Dead they walk across that sea/river bed quite successfully, however with zombies it is always possible they can throw you a curve-ball :).

If I were you I would be making sure I didn't come into contact with them, and to plan all escape routes both in places you live/work, and after that, how to get to a location that can provide good cover and supplies.

As above. Zombie Survival Guide + World War Z. Essential for any zombie curious person! Shame about the film though :(
