If I had ADSL I would not buy this, what happens when you finally get infinity in your area, new modem?! Because afaik infinity uses VDSL2 which would not be compatible.

There is plenty of areas in the uk where the prospect of fttc is a long long way off.

That's a silly reason not to consider a product

Please don't mention competitors.

Got one from one of your competitors rather than you because they offer free shipping and free returns - lasted almost 24 hours before it started giving lots of ADSL uplink errors, upload rate dropped to zilch and eventually the ADSL modem gave up the ghost.

It's on its way back, I'll try another sample before I give up and get a proper make. Nice router, shame about the lack of longevity :)

While it worked it was fine, except the firmware is a bit on the unfinished side ...

Sounds like a faulty unit to me. The firmware is generally very good on the black diamond range. The cable versions are very customisable, I am yet to try the adsl version yet though

Mine should arrive either Tues or Weds - my adsl modem/router gave up the ghost a few months ago, I had an old rickety one that's been tiding me over since.

I've actually been in an infinity area for a while now but I prefer not having BT as my ISP to depend on. I'll probably stick with ADSL2+ until I'm able to get 100Mbps service, and even if I do make the jump sooner rather than later I guess I'll find another home for it, not too bothered about that, it's what I need now that counts.

True, FTTC can be a long way off in some areas. We have it here though.

I don't think it is silly to not get one, I think the cable version with a separate modem is a much better choice. If you ever change provider you can still use your super awesome router if you have the cable version.

I think im swaying more to the Billion 7800N,because I can use it for when i get FTTC.Not sure when that is but still future proof.
I also looked at the Netgear DGND3700 Wireless-N 300Mbps ADSL2+ Router with Dual Core Processor ,but it seems to have lots of problems in reviews.

I highly recommend the Asus RT-N56U, it has never given me a hint of a problem. Never had to reboot it and its never let me down yet.

Its available for around £80 to £90 so you can spend extra if you need a separate modem and you can then use it with an future broadband you get (VDSL, Cable etc).

that is of course the other alternative. the N56U cable router is similar in many respects to the DSL-N55U a good alternative if you want a massive upgrade for the router only.

Got mine setup, only had a couple of small issues with doing so to my liking.

1. It's having trouble establishing a connection automatically with the ISP after reboot or power cycling. If I login to it and tell it to Renew the connection to the ISP manually it always works. I can deal with that easily enough for now with a simple script, not sure if it's down to my ISP or the firmware.

2. By default the FTP server port 21 on the device was Closed on the WAN side (not running/Open, but responding to requests by closing the connection). A quick port scan showed this up, and turning off the FTP server in the device didn't cure it, so I did what I always do with pesky ports, and forwarded them to a dead IP on the LAN, happily stealthing it again. This is something you need to do with routers that respond to IDENTD (113) requests with a Close, so I always check for things like that. Just wasn't expecting it to be on a service like FTP though.

Those things aside it's providing stonking wireless (best dB I've had compared to other previous b/g/n wifi routers) and a stable net connection - something I've been sorely missing for a while.

So i just got this router today. It took awhile to setup but after a phone call to my ISP i got all the right details and its connected to the net fine now.

But its actually slower than my old router.

I did a speedtest with my old router before i started setting up the N55U and it was around 6.31Mbps, now its at 2.42Mbps.

Im not even sure whats happened tbh. im fairly noobish when it comes to this stuff lol

Any suggestions?

Probably better to take it to the network subforum than this thread as it could get derailed fast, and without giving away personal details (account names etc.) sharing any other settings your ISP recommended or that you set, and saying who your ISP is that you use, would be useful details to provide. You may want to look at the device's own logs too under the Advanced Settings and Administration section, quirky things in there may come up with matches in a google.

Over adsl2+ my own line peaks at around mid 14s Mbps and I have no trouble attaining it with this, however all 3 of my modems have settings with different ranges of options available or termed/organised slightly differently.

you will need to move your SNR margin around or something.
best to take it to the networks section of the forum

Its gone back to normal now, lol soo no worries.

Getting really good pings and latency too, i mainly bought it for gaming anyways so im happy with that. :)

We have seen record sales this week of this unit.

I ordered some more today to meet demand. We will not run out so any orders placed will be fulfilled.

Thanks to everyone who has ordered so far. If you have any thoughts you wish to share I would love to hear them in this thread

Just wondered if anyone could help me,I'm trying to register my modem at Asus website and they want a product name, but I can't find it anywhere in the options they game me.

silly me,I had it set to networking and not wireless.
