Usually terrorists are pretty quick to claim their "event" is for a cause to gain maximum exposure for said cause. Saying nothing leads me to believe he is just a nutter who did a terrible thing with no real affiliation.

You clearly don't know very much about the NI conflict if you think the IRA's main aims were solely to set up some sort of theocratic catholic state. The troubles in NI had very little to do with actual religion.
