Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

About the only thing in the film that really bugged me was:

After Indy crashes the motorbike into the train and leaps onboard, you see him running across the carriages. It's so clearly a computer generated character that moves in a really odd way that it pulled me out of the action a bit. I don't know how they thought that looked even slightly realistic and I've seen better from homemade YouTube videos.

Yep, wife commented on that bit instantly. Some of the scenes looked like the 2011 CGI Tin Tin film.

I only watched Crystal Skull once (and never will again) however I know I enjoyed that more than this. Christ :(

Just watched all the previous ones recently then this, only complaint the CGI was a bit iffy in places but overall enjoyed it

That was a pretty bad film. Dumb car chases and idiotic bad guys. And that kid was the worse plot armour. Uncuffs himself and instantly cuffs the other guy who couldn't yank his own arm back. He doesn't know how to swim but learns then and there. What's the point of having him as not being able to swim? Amd to top it off he instantly becomes an expert pilot.

Which morons wrote this script?

Short round turning up in the exact right time and place in Temple of Doom, then the plot by Lao Che to kill Indiana by getting his pilots to jump out of an expensive (for 1935) plane whilst Indy slept instead of just stabbing him...then the trio surviving a drop from a plane hanging on to an inflatable boat...I could go on.

Having watched all the previous films again recently, it's always been pretty stupid.

I think that when you're enjoying a film, it's very easy to subconsciously ignore the stupid, but when a film is less enjoyable and it allows your mind to wander, it starts to find all those silly things and raises the significance of them to a high awareness level making them standout far more readily.

Enjoyed this! So much better than the KOTCS, but not as good as the original trilogy.

Indy on the train roof running, yeah that was very pants. Also, HF is too old, i was genuinely worried about his health in this! He look knackered all the time.

Much better ending even though it was timey wimey stuff. There was a throw away line from PWB where she says Archimedes had forced the deck and they could only travel back to his time. This is referring back to her card trick and a very important point that you can't just time travel anywhere - this line was quick and quiet - thought they would have made that reveal a bit bigger.

Glad they killed off La Boeuf and so glad he never did become Indy. Wonder what he thought of that?!

Good movie and the opening was fantastic - proper Indy stuff.

I went into it not expecting a lot but was pleasantly surprised, certainly had the tone and feel of the original movies with a little slapstick thrown in.

Well started watching this today. Strugged with the first 20 mins visually, then it only got worse.

I don't know if it was the frame rate or the CGI but something was off. I reminded me of one of the Transformers films in 4k. You could see the sets and props too clearly, there was no focus. Gemini Man also springs to mind with that kind of look.
Looked like a bad Mexican soap. Try watching the original Queen of the South, it was bit like that without the dutch angles.

Fortunately someone else had paid for it, so nothing lost there.

Very late to the party but didn’t really enjoy it. The opening sequence was vaguely Indy-ish but the rest was joyless with no excitement. James Mangold is a competent director but you can’t polish a turd and the writing just wasn’t that good. Waller-Bridge is a talented actress but I don’t think I rooted for her character once, just another modern hard to like female lead. I doubt I’ll watch this ever again unlike the original trilogy that I’ve re-watched in the last few years.

Watchable and better than the 4th film. I thought the de-aging was very good.

i was a bit confused as I thought at the start of the film they had taken some old footage to rehash heh, very impressive to make him look young again

Technically they did, the form of deaging they used involved computers scanning through loads of footage of him over the years and using that to apply to him in the opening sequence.

This Christmas I went and watched all the Indiana Jones Movies again and finally finished up last night with Dial of Destiny. I intentionally kept away from any reviews or discussions on the movie so I could watch it as neutral as possible. But first just a quick recap of my thoughts on the first 4 movies as it's been a while since I watched any of them. (skip down to Dial of destiny, if you just want to read that bit, it's in bold)

Raiders of the Lost Ark: A classic. And what surprised me is that it is has stood the test of time better than the Last Crusade. A few years ago I would have said that the Last Crusade was my favourite Indy Movie. However, watching them this time around, I definitely enjoyed Raiders a lot more.

Temple Of Doom: Not as good overall as the other two originals. It's still a really fun movie, that doesn't take itself too seriously at all. And because of this, I can look past all the really bad action sequences and terrible fight scenes with short round.

The Last Crusade: Another classic. Brilliant Chemistry between Sean Connery and Harrison Ford. This applies to the two previous movies as well, the casting has just been brilliant.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Only my second time watching this. And I hated it when I first watched it. This time around I actually enjoyed it, apart form the last 20 minutes or so. I think the moment it started going wrong was when Shia LaBeouf went swinging through the jungle like Tarzan and the monkeys helped him attack the bad guys. LaBeouf was a poor choice for the movie. If they had cast somebody better as Indy's son and did the last 20 minutes differently, maybe been a bit more mysterious with the Aliens, the film might have been pretty ok.

Dial Of Destiny. This is the worst Indiana Jones movie for me. The casting was terrible. Phoebe Walker Bridge did not work at all. And not sure what her Version of Short Round was there for. The story was poor, the bad guys were boring. There was no real chemistry between anyone. The only time I felt there was connection was when Sallah left Indy to the Airport. They tried hard with the action scenes to make them not too unbelievable for a guy at Indiana's age. They just didn't work. There was no fun in the movie. And I think they knew how bland it was, because when they were putting in the music they played the first few bars of the Indiana Jones music at random times just to wake everyone up and remind them they were watching an Indiana Jones movie. Like how many times did the play the first 10 seconds or so of that music during the car chase? Even when nothing had happened. It was so strange. Antonio Banderas's part was also strange.

Overall the movie was one big "meh" At least the previous movie inspired some emotion, even if it was hate. Dial of Destiny is instantly forgettable and it was a very poor way to finish off Indiana Jones :(
