Surprised there's not a thread on this (if there is and I can't find it mods please move or redirect).

So, right or wrong? Kind of on the fence with this one while harsh by Western standards (where they would probably have got 5 years in prison with 2 off for good behaviour) it does send out a message to anyone else contemplating smuggling.

Still, eight people at once, bang bang, it does make for a bit of a chill up the spine.

The message is never received though. People will always try to smuggle drugs. It's the same as people still killing in the US. Capital punishment is not an efficient deterrent.

I can understand if they're lesser drug crimes - like silly drug mules, then facing execution, that should be some level of homeland government intervention to an exception.

However, these guys are core criminals, been at it for years and they chose to risk it through a country that serves death for drug trafficking. I personally won't have given it a second glance. It's a deterrent many SEA countries uses - Singapore / Malaysia, especially when they're global hubs and it's the law of their land.

Aussie or not, they did the crime on their land. Gun execution does sound horrible, but then again, what type of execution is going to be painless?

It's not a geat course of action , especially in this day and age . However the country and many others have a massive problem with drugs , every professional smuggler or mule knows the risks or of the harsh punishments that come with it . I do often hear stories of people claiming they diddnt know they where effectively being used as mules and land themselves in serious trouble . The laws are there , so as unused to it as we are here , it's no doubt a very common and accepted form of punishment there for the crimes committed . Personally I don't think anything of it , could use harsher sentences over here for the scum that constantly ruin lives here . Drug users are one thing but it's only available thanks to these sorts of scum

Yeah, I just read about this, scares the be-jesus out of me the thought of an execution, what on earth must be going through their minds (in before someone says 'a bullet'), just horrible. Surely life in prison would be punishment enough, I know the drugs could/would go on to potentially kill many people but still, firing squad? uurrggghhh.....

The natives and government are at the mind set of if the crime is harsh enough, in this case, massive drug smuggling, then they rather they're gone than a drain on tax payers hosting them in a government facility (no matter how terrible it maybe compared else where).

Indonesia is a drug country, but very rarely drug crimes committed cos of the death penalty.

look at mexico. they abolished the capital punishment in 2005 but last execution made in 1937. the country is taking over by drug cartels.

capital punishment make people think twice. it does work

I totally get it, just doesn't sit well with me personally.

The war on drugs

Keeping us safe by creating a black market of dubious quality merchandise, effectively funding organised crime, and killing those entrepreneurs and desperate individuals who keep the supply lines open.

A wild correlation equals causation appears

So many people's lives would be made a misery from their actions.

They knew what was at stake, yet still decided to gamble with their lives and lost.

They need to face up to thier actions and bite the bullet.

Its a form of natural selection: Those stupid enough to get involved with drugs often end up dead. It actually improves the gene pool in that regard.

I believe that the firing squad will shoot their hearts rather than their brains.
