IndyCar 2012

Uh-oh ... Dario admitted contact with Sato.

But from Dario's onboard, Franchitti gives him *just* enough space [I think].

It was close, will the officials get involved? I hope not.

Was just thinking that she hasn't aged so well... Refreshing to see a celeb WAG seemingly genuinely excited by the sport though.

Perhaps it's the huge paycheck he gets that excites her? ;)

I doubt it; I'd imagine if they wanted to they would have by now, but I'm relatviely new to Indycar.

It'd be best to see Taku's onboard, but from Dario's, Sato draws alongside really late and Dario does move over when he appears. Problem is, Sato has already touched the white line and is off ... and Dario avoids it because he's already started moving up.

That was pretty naughty from Dario really, Sato was right alongside him and still squeezed him down the track.

Could do with an onboard from Satos car to see what room he really had.

It's only 2 days until the Indycar circus heads for the streets of Detroit, so here's some historical action:

The last race here was in 2008, when Justin Wilson took the win. Grand Am and Indy Lights will also be racing at Belle Isle this weekend.

Seems Dragon Racing don't have enough engines to support two cars, so Sebastian Bourdais will drive the sole car for road courses while Katherine Legge takes over the seat for ovals.

Wow, I but Mcafee and Truecar are happy that their sponsorship deal will only get their brand seen at half each of the remaining races.

I don't quite understand why Chevy can't produce extra engines, as surely they would be paid by someone for the engines themselves? If production is so limited, what happens if someone blows an engine, do they not get a replacement?

Heh, it's not like their results have been spectacular up until now, Bourdais' top 10 at Barber Park aside.

The additional teams switching before Indy due to Lotus\Judd turning out to be **** probably wasn't anticipated at the start of the season.

Turning out to be a true season to forget for Dragon Racing, bet they were well chuffed when they switched engines now this.

could have kept some of the Lotus engines for running :p

Speaking of their poor season...I don't get Katherine, she's driving a lot worse than she was in Champ Car\Formula Atlantic, bad engine or not. I guess she's still rusty from being in DTM for a few seasons. But hey, Truecar still sponsors her so what do I know :p

First practice at Belle Isle saw some rain, Sato posted the fastest time. Also includes footage of Bourdais driving a hybrid livery Dragon car (I wonder what Truecar will say about Legge's limited seat time)...

The track was dry for second and third practice. Several drivers spun at Turn 14. Justin Wilson seems to be running strong here, just like he did in Champ Car. Scott Dixon and Will Power continue to be the class of the field on road courses as well.

Qualifying highlights:

Scott Dixon took pole position with 1:10.316, Will Power was a close second with 1:10.320. Alex Tagliani made the most of his team's new engine with third place, 1:10.668. Unfortunately Rubens is at the back and Simona continues to fall victim to the terrible Lotus\Judd engine.

Drivers' preview of the race:

Finally, the morning warm up session. No major incidents, Graham Rahal went fastest.
