IndyCar 2012

This is a joke. How can you expect concrete to set quick enough to be able to run cars at 150 mph over it after 30mins?:confused::D

The road surface breaking up happened to the 1984 F1 race in Dallas as well.

As for the current situation, there wasn't much dry running on Friday for teams to discover the problem, and the track hasn't been used for a few years so it wasn't resurfaced in that time.

Just catching up with the race, complete shocker that track condition. A good effort to get it sorted enough for more running, but really should have been sorted before the race.

It's Detroit we're talking about, the city's been in decline for years since local government basically withdrew their support from most of it.

That's a fair point, if they knew it was going to be bad surely there are other tracks they could have used?

As I understand it, Indycar were extending the city an olive branch by having a race there. Bernard is negotiating with more venues for 2013.

I love how when Briscoe complained about the track surface, Penske told him he can park it if he doesn't want to drive. :p

Standings in the drivers' championship as the Texas Firestone 550 begins this weekend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_IndyCar_Series_season#Drivers.27_Championship

Will Power's lead is down to 26 points, with Scott Dixon now second on 206. Dario Franchitti is now joint 4th with James Hinchcliffe on 176 points.

I'll be posting videos of all the sessions as usual :) will be interesting to see how the teams and drivers handle one of the longest races on the calendar.

Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon set the pace in first practice at Texas, with the Lotus-powered HVM struggling to keep up at the back.

Theres still a Lotus car out there? That surprises me.

Chevy and Honda are supplying as many cars as they budgeted for. I don't think HVM can afford them anyway, they only have one relatively obscure sponsor on Simona's car. Compare that to the veritable array of logos on the Ganassis.

Edit: On a side note, I notice James Hinchcliffe's skits are rather entertaining:

Shame he was a victim of the track breaking up in Detroit, looked set for another solid finish.

Chip Ganassi proved they have ovals worked out with 3 of the top 4 places, but Alex Tagliani took pole position with a 48.5695 second run (215.691mph). Dario Franchitti joins him on the front row (48.5797) with Graham Rahal third (48.6003). Josef Newgarden was unable to set a time, and Simona de Silvestro's Lotus powered effort is also on the back row more than 2 seconds off the pace.

Well, that was quite a dramatic finish. Graham Rahal hits the wall JR Hildebrand style, leaving the way open for Justin Wilson to take the win. Perhaps they ought to switch seats given Rahal's lack of results in the Ganassi...

Just finished watching the race...

So chuffed for Wilson was willing him on those last few laps but didn't look like there was enough remaining, couldn't believe Rahal clipped the wall... Was lucky to be able to finish in the end.

Exciting end for sure :)

Well, this is the same guy that beat Mark Webber to the 2001 F3000 title and was beating his veteran teammate in a spare parts Minardi in 2003. It's a shame his height caused problems with F1 car design. Takes some talent to win with a Dale Coyne car especially on an oval :)

Some thoughts on the race, other than Justin Wilson's much deserved win...

Scott Dixon (of all people) makes an error while in the lead and puts it in the wall, showing that this race wasn't just a case of turning left at full throttle. The aero package was just right (well, except for Dario who had a swaybar problem).

Ryan Briscoe keeps up his strong oval form, but if he's still nowhere at the road courses he can't expect to challenge for the championship. James Hinchcliffe put in another solid performance to finish 4th, placing him closer to the 2012 title race. Pagenaud makes up for a disappointing Indy result with a 6th place here.

Further back, Will Power was competitive but his last minute block earned him a drive-through, putting him a lap down. Speaking of penalties, Josef Newgarden picked up one for blocking another team's pit. Alex Tagliani looked good in the early stages but didn't keep up his momentum, while Wilson's teammate and fellow Englishman James Jakes only managed 10th. Bourdais gave up his seat for Katherine Legge, and for once her slow pace was down to mechanical trouble.

Two mechanical DNFs in a row for Barrichello who didn't even make it to the start. KVR in general had a poor outing with EJ Viso pulling off with a sick car and Tony Kanaan making 8 pit stops. Marco Andretti also had a race to forget.
