IndyCar 2012

I quite like that IndyCar is predominantly street tracks for the non oval races. It puts motor sports in areas where it otherwise wouldn't be.

True, but then there's processional boredom like Detroit...nobody could pass Viso when he had a handling problem so there was a 15-car train behind him.

Schedule for this weekend's motorsport at Toronto:

Friday, 6th July

11.05-12.05: Indycar practice 1
13.55-14.55: Indycar practice 2

Saturday, 7th July

9.45-10.45: Indycar practice 3
12.10-12.50: Star Mazda race 1
13.05-14.25: Indycar qualifying
16.00-17.00: Indy Lights race (50 laps)

Sunday, 8th July

8.30-9.00: Indycar warm-up
9.50-10.30: Star Mazda race 2
13.00 (plus 30 seconds): Honda Indy Toronto race

UK race broadcast: 5:30pm on Sky Sports 2

Push-to-pass is now back in the form of a turbo boost button giving extra horsepower temporarily.

The upgraded Lotus engine was not tested by HVM as planned. In fact, de Silvestro had very little track time at all. Why Simona hasn't abandoned this laughing stock of a team is a mystery to me...

As several cars are coming close to, or have used up their maximum engine allocation, there may be more grid penalties for the race.

First practice at Toronto saw times very close with 21 cars split by just 1 second. Dario Franchitti again set the pace, having won the race last year and in 2010. Scott Dixon was second fastest and Simon Pagenaud third. Rubens Barrichello found it difficult to get to grips with the circuit, spinning on a fast lap and ending the session 19th.

Justin Wilson suffered a gearbox issue that prevented him entering his pit bay at the intended speed, causing him to collide with Sebastian Bourdais' car, injuring several crew members from both teams. The session was red-flagged early because of the incident.

Final practice and qualifying sessions are complete:

Some rain at the start of today's practice caught out a few drivers as the amount of standing water on track changed between laps. However conditions improved before the end of the session. Scott Dixon set the fastest lap followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Dario Franchitti confirmed his quick pace by taking pole position for the third race in succession, with a time of 59.3510 seconds. Will Power was a close second with 59.3757s, and Justin Wilson took third (59.4506s). Sebastian Bourdais placed 4th, his and Dragon Racing's highest grid position so far.

KV Racing's cars placed in the lower half of the grid, with Ernesto Viso last due to being penalised for blocking in qualifying, Rubens Barrichello 20th and Tony Kanaan 18th. Takuma Sato also lost his fastest lap for obstructing other drivers in the qualifying session, but still secured 11th. Despite a ~50hp engine power deficit, Simona de Silvestro is further up the grid this time in 21st place.

Push-to-pass (in the form of extra engine power activated by a boost button) will be permitted for a total of 100 seconds in the race. Drivers will manage the system manually. Unlike F1's DRS, any driver can activate the system at any time up to the specified limit.

Starting grid for tomorrow's Honda Indy Toronto:

1) Dario Franchitti
2) Will Power
3) Justin Wilson
4) Sebastian Bourdais
5) Scott Dixon
6) Alex Tagliani
7) Ryan Hunter-Reay
8) Helio Castroneves
9) James Hinchcliffe
10) Simon Pagenaud
11) Takuma Sato
12) Graham Rahal
13) Mike Conway
14) Ryan Briscoe
15) Charlie Kimball
16) Oriol Servia
17) John Hildebrand
18) Tony Kanaan
19) James Jakes
20) Rubens Barrichello
21) Simona de Silvestro
22) Josef Newgarden
23) Ed Carpenter
24) Marco Andretti
25) Ernesto Viso

Are you just here to troll threads related to US motorsport? I can see why JRS doesn't post here much...

Nice.

I'm enjoying Indy racing this year, but it really doesn't show them up as a completely professional series. I rank it around GP2 levels.

Don't like it, there's a link in my sig you'll want. :p

5 races left too. Can they go back to any of the old engines are re-use them penalty free?

Or is it very much a tough luck, you have to use the same engine until it hits a minimum of 1850 miles before changing it, and then it's scrapped.

Rahal crashes out on the back straight, race control responds with a caution. Tony Kanaan given a drive-through penalty for clipping another team's tyre in the pits.

Edit: Dixon's problem revealed to be a refuelling issue, not engine failure as suspected.

Hinchcliffe also has a technical issue, still in the pit lane with mechanics looking at the car. Pagenaud's opened up an impressive lead.

Just sat down to catch up with the action to find my recording was all messed up... Oh well have to watch it from where it is and Sky Sports 2 is all messed up too.

Rubbish :(

Will have to try catch a rerun.

Hey Guerrilla - you didn't miss much. Hinchcliffe, Dixon and de Silvestro out from mechanical issues and Rahal crashed on his own. The caution from that put the early leaders back in the pack as they pitted late, so Pagenaud, Hunter-Reay and Kanaan are the top 3.

Dario's recovering gradually and Barrichello's been spending most of the race going backwards. Newgarden just took 9th (he started 20th).

Edit: Pagenaud finally pits for fresh tyres, Briscoe and Franchitti also in.

Viso looks to have a terminal car problem, he's pitted 3 times in the last 12 laps.

Ryan Hunter-Reay maintains his lead with a quicker stop than Simon Pagenaud. Will he make it 3 wins in succession?

Meanwhile Charlie Kimball takes 5th after the second round of stops followed by Josef Newgarden in 6th.

Viso re-emerges on the track but is 4 laps down.

Sounds pretty good, although I imagine it always would when I can't see it :p

Would be great for Pagenaud to get a win, he's having a great season for a Rookie, would like to see TK have another good result.

Oh well will have to keep my eyes open for a rerun of the race, hope it's a good one for you, enjoy it mate :)

I'm using the live timing on the Indycar website.

Would be great for Pagenaud to get a win, he's having a great season for a Rookie, would like to see TK have another good result.

He graduated to sportscar racing back in Europe, so he has plenty of experience in powerful cars which seems to have translated well to Indycar.

Thanks. :)

Oooh... Didn't brush the wall as I thought. Front wing endplate and upper elements fell off and went under the tyre. Also battered mirror.

Surely he must have had contact with something/one to make that flop around like that.

Power hit something in Turn 7 and pits to repair the damage. Shame if this costs him the championship, he's lost out several times very narrowly over the years. Was pretty good in Champ Car too.

Ryan Briscoe into the top 5, passing Newgarden. Wilson, Barrichello and Bourdais are in the top 10. Only 19 laps left.
