IndyCar 2012

I was hoping to watch this one with the free weekend, but I'm out Sunday night so if the Sky encryption will lock down my recording of the show when the free weekend ends I wont be able to :(

Now don't quote me ojn this, but I'm sure ir ead that recordings from this weekend WILL be playable. Might be an idea to phone Sky and ask them to read 'the info tab, knowledge updates' as I'm not back at work until monday.

Warm-up highlights will follow shortly as Indycar updates their webpages, in the meantime here's the qualifying round-up.

Qualifying highlights:

Interviews with the top 3 qualifiers:

Ryan Hunter-Reay keeps up his strong form by taking pole for the 2012 Edmonton Indy (1:17.2338). Dario Franchitti was second (1:17.2446) and Ryan Briscoe third (1:17.4238). Takuma Sato picked up a strong fourth.

However due to the five fresh engines per season regulation, several drivers have exceeded their limit and will be dropped 10 places as a penalty. Ryan Hunter-Reay is one of them, so he starts 11th. Simona de Silvestro drops to last, Will Power to 17th, Oriol Servia to 24th, Scott Dixon to 18th. Rubens Barrichello is promoted to 7th and Justin Wilson starts 10th.

3) Takuma Sato
4) Alex Tagliani
5) Helio Castroneves

Interesting possibilities for the race itself as both the Indy Lights and Star Mazda events had intermittent rain:

UK broadcast is on Sky Sports 4 at 7.45 tonight.

Holding it on an airfield is an interesting choice. Looks like there is almost no spectators there. Nice flat open area though.

It's a good track but the attendance has steadily fallen since the heyday of CART in the 1990s.

Meanwhile Rahal and Wilson just pulled off some good passes (for once the boost button worked).

Edit: Kanaan and Hildebrand have pitted early, possible mechanical issues for them? Hunter-Reay up to 9th now.

Edit2: Hinchcliffe makes a pass for 10th only to lose it again at the next corner.

Hinchcliffe losing a lot of ground now. Power and Bourdais got by and Newgarden is closing in. Simona de Silvestro being held up by Ed Carpenter.

Edit: Mike Conway gaining places, up to 17th from 23rd at the start. Scott Dixon falling back noticably. de Silvestro finally gets past Carpenter and chases the rest of the pack.

Edit 2: Takuma Sato with a new fastest lap, 1:18.1935. Will Power brushes the wall, looks to have escaped without damage. Scott Dixon making up some of the lost places just now.

D'OH!

Push to pass may help, but you still have to brake at the right point at the end of the straight. :D

Nice to see Sato still in 3rd though.

More pitstops, de Silvestro and Conway. Will Power passes Simon Pagenaud for 11th, but is immediately re-passed on the next corner.

Jakes, Viso, and Servia also pitting for their first stop of the afternoon.

Edit: more stops. Most of the field is on the Firestone (Bridgestone) hard compound tyres.

If Tagliani keeps it up, this would be his first Indycar win since Champ Car at Road America 2004.

Barrichello and Pagenaud lost a lot of ground during that first round of stops. Simona de Silvestro passes Hildebrand who seems to be running his own race at the back.

I didn't see much with him coming out of the pits like that, was he supposed to sit there until there was a huge gap? There was a gap, he went into it.

Tagliani, Franchitti and Castroneves - looks like a fun group

No penalty issued so Power and Hunter-Reay are cleared of any wrongdoing.

Indeed, long-time CART veterans together on the track.

Edit: de Silvestro defends against Hildebrand's push-to-pass. Even the fight at the back is interesting :p Hildebrand gets through later in the lap, that Lotus engine is incredibly underpowered.

Edit2: Sato uses P2P to go for 3rd at the final hairpin but is unsuccessful.

Sato takes Dario.

Not bad from the kamikaze :p speaking of ex-F1 drivers, what happened to Rubens and Seabass? They've fallen back a lot in the second stint.

Edit: Ernesto Viso losing several places on this lap. Halfway through with no retirements so far, Tagliani still leading from Castroneves and Sato.
