IndyCar 2012

I think so, Simona de Silvestro. Surely only a matter of time before she bails out too.

No word from HVM on that yet though. If they get in some more clean practice runs without engine\ECU problems then I don't see why they would withdraw.

What about Bourdais?

Edit: My mistake, Dragon have switched to Chevy and ran in the 4th day of practice.

HVM are struggling to make the cut, Simona's best time was outside of the 105% mark.

Newgarden's looked fast throughout the practice sessions so far, looks like Sarah Fisher's tenure as a team owner has been a lot more successful than her own driving career :p

Moving on, today's 'Pole Day', with the top 24 spots up for grabs including a $100,000 prize for pole position. So far Helio Castroneves has the fastest lap at 227.7mph.

Some footage of Day 6 practice, including an interview with Katherine Legge:

The first 24 drivers have qualified for the Indy 500, with Ryan Briscoe taking pole by just 0.003mph from James Hinchcliffe, the closest margin in Indianapolis history. Both drivers exceeded an average speed of 226.4mph. Ryan Hunter-Reay was third with 226.2mph.

Championship leader Will Power showed that he's not just a road course master with a 225.4mph run to take 5th. Josef Newgarden qualifies 7th for his first Indy 500, confirming his quick pace all week. Ana Beatriz takes up 13th spot, proving her competitive race in Sao Paulo was not a fluke.

Dario Franchitti is just 16th, Takuma Sato 19th and Justin Wilson 21st. Sebastian Bourdais did not make the top 24 and proceeds to "Bump Day" which will determine the remaining 9 entries.

The detailed qualifying results are available here: http://media.indycar.com/pdf/2012/INDY-pole_qualifying.pdf

Jean Alesi has qualified.

Suprised he has managed to qualify, still way off the pace though... That Lotus engine really is ****, and it's been unreliable to boot!

Bourdais' new car colour scheme looks nice too...

Just checked the time if anyone is wondering for this, it'll be on Sky Sports 4 at 4:30pm on Sunday.
Doesn't look like this one will be on the Sky Sports F1 channel for those who only have that :(

Impressive time from Barrichello.
Lotus are just embarrassingly bad. No engines, not enough spares, safety limits set too low so any slight incident causes them to shut off and worst of all, just slow.

Isn't Dany Bahar is doing a great job marketing the brand? :D

Certainly does. They no longer have to have the black and gold - oh look, we're Lotus. No, we are... Honestly! Stop laughing... we are Lotus. Aaaah, but the paint scheme has nothing to do with tobacco advertising. it's just retro. But, still. It's it nice that we're Lotus and we're back in Indycar, especially after our last attempt when you banned our car the week before it was due to be started for the first time. It's nice for us to come back and grace you with Dany Bahar's presence in this most important of markets... err... motorsports.

*for those going eh? to the banned car. It was a variant of the Lotus 95T F1 program done especially for Indy and was pretty much pushed out by the other teams. Strangely, similar things happened at Le Mans...*

Oh, and there may be some sarcasm in this post. ;)

Lotus offered half-hearted support to the Judd engine program at best, at worst they simply didn't pay up.

As for bans, half of the field was pulled up over illegal brake modifications before the Indy practice began :p

Edit: Just so you get an idea of how big IMS actually is...

Woah, I knew it was big, but not quite THAT big!

It actually looks huge up close as well. Unlike Silverstone which is a large field with things dotted about the place, Indy is concentrated. The rears of the grandstands are massive, and back onto what starts off as a normal almost residential street (well it was when I was there back in '00). It is just easier to get a sense of scale of the place.
