I'm thinking of changing my last name as I simply dont like it, I should imagine that the paperwork side of things would be fairly straight forward. What I would like to know is if anyone here has done it before and what did it cost, what was involved and what the hidden things/costs you dont think about.

Not sure if places like DVLA would charge if you changed your name on license or if it costs to change a name on your passport etc.

Thanks chaps

If anyone in the know replies to this could they also answer whether you would actually need to buy a new passport or driving license if you decided you wanted a middle name?

The cost of changing the name on your passport:

For an adult passport it costs £77.50 for standard service, £112.50 for the one-week Fast Track service and £129.50 for the Premium one-day service. For a child passport it costs £49 for standard service, £96.50 for the one-week Fast Track service and £109.50 for the Premium one-day service.

I think there is something quite compelling about the things we don't choose - family, name, country of birth - I wouldn't change them for the world.

This is coming from someone who has "Dick" in their surname and was mercilessly 'bullied' over it!

I would never change my name (unless part of a protection scheme or monster debt financial fraud)

Diplock - It's not THAT bad a name.

I have a friend that had a fairly normal surname and got engaged to a guy with the surname Givehead, but the engagement got called off. I lost contact with her after she left the company we worked for and I found her on Facebook recently. She told me she was getting married in a couple of weeks and I laughed and said at least you wont be Mrs Givehead and said it's worse.... she got married and changed her name on Facebook to her married name - Sam Annal.
