Installing a bathroom myself.

Hi just a quick update to let you all know how its going on.

Jobs i had done since last update

1. I have skimmed the wall that was a little uneven from removing the tiles, pleased with result for my first go, not perfect but its being tiled over so who cares.
2 Laid down all my 6mm ply wood on the floor and screwed it into place, again pleased with result, seems solid and good fit around edges and pipes.
3. Have started tiling the walls, nearly completed 1 full wall, and very pleased with results, took it slow and for the 1 wall it has taken me around 1 days work in between doing other stuff around the house.
4. Cut out a hole all the way through my house to install an extractor fan, straight forward and happy with result

Only problem i have had is when getting the ladders from my dads house, put them in my girlfriends car and because of the length they had to go up against the front windscreen, i have done this twice before with no problems, this time when over a very small bump and its cracked the windscreen, been quoted £120 inc vat for a new one :(

Apart from the cracked windscreen everything is going well, cant put any pictures up as at the moment i don't have a phone due to selling my s2, and my s4 being over a week late on delivery :(

quick question, i put a long baton down on the wall for a straight edge to start tiling from, when i remove this how to i tile under the tiles that were held up by the baton without them falling down again? put the wood back on the wall lower down and measure position so it match's up with the tiles as i tile down?

Try this approach for your wall tiling -

Approx 1 tile above the floor, put your baton at a true horizontal. Tile up from this point.

After those tiles have set, remove your baton, and tile the single row along the bottom. This means you don't have to worry about that final row sliding down, since they'll be supported on the floor regardless, but it also means you can cut any angles that you need to if your floor isn't perfectly flat.

At a bit of a roadblock at the moment, i cant tile anymore until my plumber comes to sort out the plumb fixings on the old shower and cap them off so i can tile around them, will hopefully get a picture up of my progress tonight after i have had a little tidy up. He cant come until thursday/friday so no more progress to be made until saturday!

As promised for those interested/following this here is a update pic of the current state of the bathroom!

As you can see it does not look too bad for a first time tiler/bathroom install. In places a tile or two is a few mm raised outwards, and slightly smaller gap/larger gap for grout line but thats due to the wall being crap and not straight, plus my inexperience

Looks good to me

Thanks! Really pleased with it so far! Plumber arrived this morning and sorted out my shower pipes, so now saturday/sunday i expect to make some good progress and get the majority of the tiling finished! and then next weekend start on the floor tiles, and hopefully week after get the sink and toilet in and will be finished!

Looks great!

It's a really rewarding job tiling. Especially when you have done all the setting out and finally start bopping the tile on.

Just a quick update of work done over the weekend, did not get as much done as i wanted to do but still fairly happy with progress. Take a look!

Its going to be a few more weeks until its done, but im hoping to finish by end of the month, but will just take it steady and see how it goes so i dont rush it.

Got a bit of a problem, i installed the tiles around the window as shown in the bellow picture, but when i have come to think about the window trim i think i have messed it up? am i soposed to put the window trim under the tiles i have installed? can i put it under the tiles yet to be installed or is that not possible? Means me ripping off a good 8 cut tiles :(

Don't Panic! The corner trims work from only one side so you can buy a trim, tack it onto the window ledge and around the window then tile onto it.

But all the videos i have seen show it being placed on the front facing tiles? also the trims i have only have a small piece of lip to cover the front facing tiles if that makes sense

It think it will be fine doing it either way and should look exactly the same if its just a quadrant. If the plaster is a bit high in places and it's creating a gap under the trim then you may just need to carefully chip a bit of plaster off so it sits down flat onto the tiles you have put on.

I'm no expert so someone else might have a better idea, but i can't see anything wrong with using the trims the way you were going to.

I have done it both ways, used this from Wickes http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/166084

I just bed it in on the window still & then tiled over it, from your photo you shouldn't have any problem, might need to trim the plaster so it sits flush with exsisting tiles.

make sure you have adhesive on those tiles already there to ensure good bond when you bed the trim, & to have water resistant seal.

My tiles are slightly above the plaster edge, so if anything i will have to put a little more adhesive down to level off the trim with the front face tiles. Hoping it will look ok, losing sleep over it lol, its something i am dreading doing and keep putting it off

Oh! Look for some Tilrite tile trim, various widths available, should get you around you slight glitch, better than some other tile trims.

http://www.tilerite.co.uk/Tile+Trims/9.5mm+Profile+Plus+Tile+Edge/54/202/

Only problem Tile Rite does not supply direct to the public, there a link on there site, they will you give stockist, maybe tile shop, or trade place, crazy process I know.

EDIT: You might need to skim down plaster on window still t to allow it to cover raised tiles properly, & bed the trim on a bed of tile adhesive.

I think the only plus side to putting the trim under the front facing tiles, is that you can use it to square off the window hole precisely. It looks slightly more difficult to fit it into the insert, although practically it should look the same.

I see your work has been approved by Supervisor Cat, so no problem there ;)
