Installing a bathroom myself.

But all the videos i have seen show it being placed on the front facing tiles? also the trims i have only have a small piece of lip to cover the front facing tiles if that makes sense

Well I don't know why that is. If you place it onto the front facing tiles you are less likely to get a good finish as you have to be very careful you don't place it too low or uneven and its less likely to line up with the ledge tiles IMHO - in particular if the window sill structure is not level.

At least doing it with the front facing tiles on you have a line to work from and can adjust the depth of the sill tile using more or less adhesive. A spirit level is your friend :)

Oh and its a good idea to use some adhesive or polyfilla to fill the gaps between the edge of the wall and the tile as shown in your pictures before tacking on the edging.

After grouting, a bit of mastic around the window seal and it'll hide any small whoopsies with the cutting in anyway - just get the front facing edge right make sure the edge is the edge of a fresh tile and not a cut, then cut to the window frame then you'll have a perfect edge.

When going around the window with the edging measure precisely and cut the edgings at 45 degrees with an extra sharp Stanley blade. Don't be satisfied with any corner imperfections as it will bug you forever and there is nothing you can do about it ;)

Once you start it off it won't take you very long and then it'll be done so just pucker up and get on with it :)

Bloody hell I hate tiling.

Apologies if this is viewed as off-topic, posting here as I reckon this thread is becoming more of a "doing a bathroom yourself" as opposed to the OP's specific case.

It's taken me 6 weeks of effort in my spare time whilst working full time to do this (excluding 4 full days at the start), and I've gone from...

Mate that looks boss, well done. How much would you say the overall project cost you?

Getting on towards 3k I reckon, 300 or so of which was plumber cost, as I had a lot of old pipework redone, and a remote pump fitted to go to the shower. All the actual bathroom itself I did myself to keep costs down.

Have not forgot about this thread btw guys! so will just do a little update, but for now no pictures as GF is currently in the bath lol.

Anyway i have the sink in place new towel radiator in place, all walls tiled, window tiled, pipes boxed in, have a little bit more floor to tile around the toilet and a few bits and bobs to finish off, but all should be finished this time next week fingers crossed!

Total cost including materials, £1300ish i think. Not too bad, would say i saved a good few £ doing everything myself!

Also that includes cost of the tools i had to buy that i didnt have, such as diamond drill bits! Very expensive had to buy 4 of varying sizes each one around £12 a peice! few tile cutting things, pipe cutters etc

some seriously good work within this thread......an update to my project..........man I`m knackered, had a week off work doing this and still some way to go, got a plumber in to redo waste and below floor as it is upstairs so didn't want a disaster lol

I`m putting shower cubicle (3 sided) AND a bath in (as Sarah Beeny no less claims if u don't have a bath ure ruling out 30% potential buyers) so plan/layout has been kinda forced on me, stopped wrecking now and starting building/improving, I`m liking this Marmox board.

i know what you mean about being knackered, well im not actually knackered but working 8am until 5pm, and then gym mon-fri 5-7pm most nights i just cant be bothered to do a few hours in the bathroom so would have been finished a lot sooner otherwise!

Looking like a big job newbiejim, cant wait to see how it turns out, originally i was going to put in just a shower, a big expensive one with big jets and steam, they are around £1k+ but was talked out of it as apparently a lot of people like baths and it may take longer to sell, so i opted for a bath with a shower and screen.

lol yeah, I`m 52 but still 20 something in my head.......this is really the first time I have ever felt that I was too old, serious sustained physical effort becomes MUCH more difficult.

I understand on the super duper shower, I was contemplating that too but ultimately the rational choice was made, I have however a remote control aqualisa thermostatic shower to go in lol, a tad superfluous but the remote control was kind of free so I figured why not.......... soon I will be able to hit a button when I get out of bed, saunter down the east wing where the shower will be on and at exactly my desired temperature lol.

I`m doing three walls with THESE and one wall with a kind of bold tile as yet to be decided on, those Topps ones are very nice and contemporary looking, £30 sq mtr and u get a 10% discount...

You should check out google to find the equivalent tiles online. We did this when we got our mosaic sheeting, and the exact same stuff was 50% cheaper. Topps prices are quite high compared to most.

I did kinda, but wanted to be sure they would infact be the the exact same as I know these are really nice, kinda highish gloss and rectified give them a decent look imho, I did send off for a sample of a tile I thought was the same and it was disappointing, not as bright white and less polish.

Good news! bathroom is now complete, just a few bits and bobs to tidy/smarten up!

just a question, i have got the toilet in, and have it dilled in to the floor and the wall behind, when you sit on it, it kind of makes a noise and im worried its going to crack or damage my tiles! should i have put something behind and under the toilet where it meets the tiles so make it quiet?

or am i worried about nothing and eventually it will settle in and go quiet like a normal toilet?

What sort of noise? Assuming your tiling is flat and the toilet has had the fixings tightened up, there should be no movement in anything.

Like their is slight moving in the toilet when you sit down and like a grating noise, not much but it doesnt sound good! have i overtightened it down or does it need tightening some more? i did it by hand its is fairly tight.

or maybe their is a bit of grit bellow/behind the toilet and when you sit it crush's could be that i suppose.

it does not have water to it yet as the flexible hose i had does not quite reach! one things for sure, i am replacing the toilet seat and bath panels that came with the set, they are literally as thick as disposable chinese takeaway containers, but more flimsy!

I'd remove the pan, give both the base of the pan and the tiles a wipe with a soft cloth to remove any grit, and also use a straight edge to check that the floor is flat.

I'm not sure what fixings you use for the pan, but having a plastic sleeve for the screw to go through is always beneficial to minimise movement and ensure that the screw doesn't crack the pan.

Just realised i have not posted the finished results of my bathroom, so here goes.. P.s i have yet to fit a bathroom cabinet as i have not found one yet.

I am over the moon with the results to say i did 90% of it myself bar a bit of plumbing and had 0 DIY experience prior to undertaking this project! hope you guys like it :)

Looks a million times cleaner brighter and fresher imo!

Just for reference this is the state the bathroom was in before i started
