Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake thread

I can't really say i'm looking forward to DDR5 in all honesty. It'll probably be the same as DDR to DDR2 to DDR3 to DDR4. All of the early sets had rubbish timings and it wasn't really until about half way through each cycle that we got fast ram with tight timings. I don't see DDR5 being any different.

Yeah I could see early adopters getting burnt.

Not only are they getting first gen sub optimal DDR5 kits but it's launching with Zen4 - a new cpu on a new socket and new chipset platform - prepare for bios bugs galore again. I'm waiting one or two years after before I jump in, by then the platform will have matured and DDR5 quality improved

My thoughts exactly. However much i might be tempted to upgrade in the next 2 years, i'm going to stick with my 3950x, mobo and ram.

Also at a premium cost too don't forget ;)

That's partly why i will probably go Zen 3 and skip the first lot of chips from Intel/AMD that support DDR5 and probably jump on a year later.

I won't be going with zen3 because it will be much the same as zen+ but with no further upgrade path. For me, i fully intend to stay with my 3950x and mobo. Zen 4 proper is likely to be my next upgrade, but not until the entire DDR5 stack is sorted to decent speeds and timings. I have got more fed up with buying into a new platform and waiting for good ram than i have ever got fed up of a platform because of a cpu. That includes Intel and AMD bye the way.

That's not what most of the rumours are saying, but we will see soon enough i guess

I know. But zen+ was just an incremental change. Zen 2 was and is a game changer, zen 3 isn't really 3 at all, it's zen2+............................surely you know that ?

I always thought zen+ was just a refinement. That's why improvements was small. Zen 3 apparently is new architecture. So I hope for a decent IPC improvement from Zen 2

Nope, talk from AMD like Zen 3 having performance “right in line with what you would expect from an entirely new architecture.” give me expectations of being more than that

Yep, maybe i'll have a rethink on an upgrade. As it happens i suspect the 4950x won't surface until after all the other sku's, we will all know by then if it's worth it.

very exciting times for sure! hopefully available to buy around September
should really help single core performance and lower the latency which is really help amd out vs intel as the muti core performance seems spot on for the price

The hardware unboxed video with the i7-10750H Vs i7-9750H makes for grim viewing. Very small single core performance. What is the point? Intel will have huge OEM support and push these out like there is no tomorrow. I was disappointed in my Ryzen 7 3750H CPU but the 4000 CPUs would be a good upgrade. Are Intel stuck? Why pay £1500 for a new laptop when the performance is the same as old gen? Intel IMO are relying on nVidia to keep them at the top with the 2080 options.

hardware unboxed said its not really any better than 8th gen mobile parts perhaps 4% at best in gaming, some threaded workloads did improve obviously but overall not very exciting and if you have a 8th or 9th gen mobile system its best to keep them and save your cash, or go for amd's 4th gen ryzen notebooks if you want something more upto date :)
