INTEL 3820 X79 BASED CPU NOW IN STOCK!!

But its substantially more expensive, where as a 2700k and a 3820 are relatively close price wise.

I though the whole point of SB-E was 6 cores. With only 4 in 3820 I am not sure it is any better than 2700K.

It isn't any better for 4 cores, but buy a 2600k now and you are stuck on 4 cores and you can get ivy, but still 4 cores and then after that you need a new mobo and cpu.
X79 gives you 4 or 6 cores now plus upgrade to IB-E later with 6 or possibly 8. Add in the extra ram, and decent oc potential and its worth the extra, even if it doesn't quite match SB on the clocking front people are running at 4.8-5ghz on 24/7 basis judging from some of the sigs in here

Yeah, its comparable to a 2600/2700K.If you can get it over clocked sitting @ 4.5Ghz its not going to be a slouch:D

Well i was waiting for ivy bridge, but im thinking about getting this with gigabyte x79-ud5. Its over kill for what i need it but the extra ooomph is always there should i need it. I could do a lot more video too with this.
hmmm, very tempting.

Wait for IB or you'll be kicking yourself.

This chip is no better than a 2600K/2700K, the 16x/16x multi GPU support and quad channel memory are more tick box features than significant performance benefits.

It's not like you won't be able to sell a IB/LGA1155 bundle if you do ever decide to go with a hex SB-E.

Does anyone REALLY upgrade their cpu on a given platform? To be quite honest once i mate a board and cpu for me or a client it usually sees it out to its EOL or sold on/traded etc.. One thing i've noticed with early 'future proof' boards is that once the cpu eventually comes, there will have been a newer chipset or boards with better features such as beefier power delivery (or say USB4/SATA4 hypothetically speaking of course etc).. which everyone will prefer.

I have just looked at the power consumption figures and OMG, i cant be having this chip.
its going to to be i7 2600 or the Ivy B equivalent for me.

edit: i7 2600 k

+1 just save your money and get IB.

So what should/could Phenom II users do.... what's the best upgrade option?

I'm asking because my not getting the best out of my 6970 CF with a (4 year old) 955BE @4+

if you already have Z68 then yes, if you are upgrading from AM2 or LGA775 and want the most future proof machine possible then I'd say it's a tough choice

with the ability to take 16x/16x and the possibility of 8 core goodness later, a 3820 is the cheapest root to setting yourself up for a PC that will outlast a Z68 for quite some time

yes yes you can resell z68 later when you want to upgrade, but how much easier will it be to just swap out a CPU and keep all the rest of your system running as it is without a full upgrade and rebuild

outlast a z68 chipset yes - agreed - faster than a z68 + cheap Ivybridge ?

not sure - you could almost buy a Z68 + 2500k now, sell the 2500k for 100 when Ivybridge comes out, buy an Ivybridge - and still be around same price as a 2011 + 3820 ?
