Please correct me if wrong, but similar price to 1800X but beats it in all areas?

Considering a big ATX builds with one of these bad boys? Is it pointless from R7 1700? Will AMD have a Zen response for my chipset at some point? Or will be it be Threadripper taking on these and above for next few years?

i7 is £580
1700 is £320

Also watch this before making any decision....

...and yes I am an INTEL fanboy

Motherboards are also going to be more expensive due to extra features on HEDT platform that most people don't care about. Threadripper is AMD's HEDT platform to compete with X299 (which the i7-7820X supports). Zen 2, a refinement to the AM4 mainstream platform, isn't due until next year.

Although he does say 1800x, not 1700 which are a lot closer in price.

But the 1800x is just a clocked 1700 is it not? There isn't much difference in performance between the two i believe.

Yeah it's the 1800X comparison I am after, as that's the max chip I could put in this setup I have. Also price is similar ish for Intel.

As above... Ur corrected lol, it's double the price not similar

Double the price of 1800X? Did you read first post wrong?

What I'm wandering is any move pointless when I already have R7 1700, also will AMD bring more Zen chips that will take on Intel on this chipset. Not just threadripper which also needs new socket..

Yes a 1800x is just a different binned version of the 8c/16t R7 CPU. I assume they were considered the "best" ones.

Practically however, the 1700 and 1700X basically clock up to 1800X speeds whilst the latter has very little headroom (you may get 4.1Ghz on the 1800x but only 3.9-4Ghz on the 1700X for example).

The 7820X to 1800x comparison works in isolation but doesn't hold to scrutiny once you factor in the wider market.

Why not wait for Threadripper which will probably be close in price and destroy that thing in every way possible :p Amds advantage currently is that they saw competition prices and can now adjust accordingly. And my guess is that 7820 will be primary target as it is probably only cpu in this family that is worth any attention

But why would you compare it to the 1800X? If it overclocked higher than the 1700 by 500+ MHz then I could understand it but it doesn't. If you're overclocking and go for a 1800X then you obviously don't care about value at all and just want the fastest chip possible, in which case the i7-7820X is probably more up your street?

You are also comparing a HEDT platform to a mainstream platform.

1800X is £140 cheaper, so not really similarly priced at all; not to mention you can drop an 1800X into a £50 budget board if you wanted to. While the 7820X needs a £230 board... minimum... or £300+ if you want a good one.

Not even the same ballpark for pricing.

Threadripper is the competitor to the i9. Zen+ wont be out until Q1-Q2 next year for the AM4 mainstream.

I'm looking forward to Zen+.

1700 and the 1800x are the same silicon, just lowered clock speed. It's the same chip.

Change an entire rig for 4 extra PCIe lanes?
your forgetting somthing massive

x299 chipset has 24 Pci-E + the CPU
AM4 chipset has 8 pci-e + the CPU

so much much more than 4

AMD Desktop AM4 Chipsets

Chipset Maximum PCI-E Lanes(depending on board type)

8 PCI-E 2.0 Lanes

4 PCI-E 3.0 Lanes

6 PCI-E 2.0 Lanes

4 PCI-E 2.0 Lanes

4 PCI-E 3.0 Lanes

i want a 1800XT

1800X Threadripper (same stats but with extra pci-e)
