Why are you getting so defensive? It is a fact that the motherboard manufacturers have been trying to address, by improving the VRM heatsinks as in certain circumstances the VRM's were reaching their peak allowed temperature, and then causing the throttling, and also not allowing the CPU to be overclocked to it's full potential. Again not because the VRM design was poor, just the cooling solution was not adequate for the power draw by the CPU at that time.

Prime has been the go to stress test for years. We know its higher loads than most will incur but its still the stability benchmark.

handbrake x265 uses AVX2 and FMA and other similar instructions that prime uses, so I imagine the loads there will be similar.
 
Imagine? If you can get some proof that handbrake causes the same issues then ill completely accept that and agree with you that you will need some augmented cooling if you use it. But i doubt it does. It really isnt 'the' stability benchmark anymore, if there ever was such a thing. One thing it is good for is testing your cooling system, but for anything else? As i said earlier, i remember when furmark was killing cards left and right but no one decried the GPUs that were dying because its not even slightly indicative of real world use, for anyone.

Throttling in actual work is bad, throttling in artificial stress tests, does it matter?

I wasn't targeting your prime comment to be fair, only whats seems like complete denial or that it was irrelevant to everyone since who uses AVX/2/512? The use of vector operations may be very important to some people, and I am sure many more programs will be using it more extensively as the CPU's with AVX capabilities are now more widespread.

Anyhow, yes we know - you don't care, but this forum is read by people that may care, and find it informative and relevant to their purchases and builds.

What is an issue though, is that if you want to run avx etc AND a high overclock, you will need to delid, no question. Temps on the cpu itself are something i can attest to personally. And for a £900ish cpu thats inexcusable. Intel goofed big on that.

Handbrake as already stated uses AVX-512 to it's full capability causing throttling of the CPU.

Were talking about VRM's here, are you going to delid those? Because thats where the issue is, not the CPU.
 
If that throttling is due to VRM temps then i will concede that point for sure. But if its due to the power limit in the motherboard or something else which can be disabled? not so much

And i, as someone who has the cpu is saying that the cpu temps are the issue (if anything is), not the VRM, i have never seen an issue with the vrms, but i have seen the cpu temps cause drama.

That chart, aside from one noticeable difference, shows a very similar draw to aida. Which is less than prime, far less

Thats because you are not using AVX instuctions. Haven't we already been over this?
x299 + overclock + AVX = vrm and or cpu throttles.
 
Of course i have used them, its not in my day to day, but while testing i have. Never any VRM throttles, defo can get cpu throttling due temps on the core.

Just have not seen high VRM temps on my system, bear in mind the cases these reviews use are not the best for cooling, being open.

How did you test for throttling?
No offence meant to you but i believe Roman more, who actually used that board and said it was the worst for it.
 
Yes these guys do love the drama and publicity no question. However, if handbrake is causing a very similar draw to aida, then it wont throttle based on my observations. But hey, i dont feel the need to go into the Ryzen threads and talk about the plethora of bugs on that platform. so meh, horses for courses.

Because YOU didn't see it, doesn't mean its not happening though. As said lower scores in benchmarks and power consumption drops are the things Roman noticed.

You don't need to tell me about the bugs, I bitch about that just as much. Ryzen/TR/x299 all have bugs.
I'm hoping coffee isn't as bad.

He works for Caseking, the people who own OCUK, for all intents and purposes he is, and did target the manufacturers directly, asking them to fix the VRM cooling solution, he was not trying to create drama, just stop customer backlash.

Indeed, ASUS even revised their ROG Rampage VI Apex heatsinks.
 
OK guys, got to get up early so ill leave it at that, i'm really enjoying the platform for what it is, it has a few issues which i've noticed myself sure, but so do many others. Motherboard itself has been rock solid as well to be fair. In the no doubt small subsection of users who simply nail prime small fft 24/7 and get vrm problems, well maybe they should change motherboard, for me, its fine. And as always;
