i7 is the new generation ... i5 is the new bridge to help you get there

yeah thats it, when the Q6600 came out it wasnt Intels flagship chip was it?, but for price and performance it was 2nd to none

Anyone know how much an i7 920 and decent motherboard dropped in price 2 months after release? Looking at i5 + P55 + DDR3 + Crossfire HD58xx for christmas.

they went up a bit as the pound went up DOWN!!

If you look at the performance of the Q9xxx range they can still compete with the best AMD has to offer, certainly better than the original Phenom which was all AMD had to offer at the time.

i7 wasn't rushed and was more about pushing home the advantage.

Would it be worth it from a gaming perspective to upgrade from a very stable and reliable 4000Mhz E8600 to a Core I7 920 with a possible OC of 4000Mhz,

I don't think so. A 4 GHz Core 2 Duo should be more than enough for current games.

From the reviews the picture is a little confusing, trouble is the reviews talk about $100 motherboards and sub $200 chips. Looking at shops here in blighty the motherboards are way higher priced than that and this confuses the decision. Looking at our pricing, as it currently stands, D D Danneh's right, i5 750 on 1156 to keep the cost down or jump to the 920 on 1366 for the extra mem bandwidth, future upgrade path and HT.

OMG I HATE Intel.

I am building a new rig (Very slowley as I was dumb enough to sell my current PC to build a new one, but instead bought a flat) and really wanted a I7 920, but the I5 got me thinking.

Should I go for I7 920 or the new socket?

Bored ..not even slightly, it hasn't even been 2 days yet!

CPU's and motherboards are much more interesting than graphics cards anyway ...well I think so.

Both I5's on the site have Dual Channel DDR3 Controller where as the I7 has triple controller, What does this actually mean?
