All this doom and gloom and while I'd usually be there with folks complaining about it (to be fair, I've already left my snide remark on the first page), I must remind folks that for most of us, it's unnecessary to be so negative about this right now.
Absolutely, we're all correct in that this year the prices of CPUs (and GPUs, though less of an excuse there since Nvidia launched 1000 series before Brexit) have sharply increased. But nobody is asking us to buy these products, it's not like they're being forced down our throats. We're also correct in that the improvements this gen are minimal, a likely result of no competition from AMD. We'll only see if this is 100% true come next year, post-Zen, what will Intel do?
I remember when I bought my i7-4790k and Gigabyte Z97 motherboard in an OCUK bundle during an amazing sale period where I saved 20% off the processor and close to that for the motherboard too. But that was 2 years ago. What do I have to say to these price increases?
I for one am happy that my i7 4970k still holds up, allows me to put money into other things.
Exactly that. I'm glad I have my Devil's Canyon, I really couldn't care less about Skylake. CPUs and motherboards are probably the least upgraded part of PCs, or at the very least they are among the parts that last the longest and needed to be upgraded the least. Unless one of them needs replacement due to damage, most of us won't be changing our i7 CPUs for several years. And unlike GPUs, we won't be needing to buy new CPUs every year for upgrades either. You really shouldn't be looking at CPUs like graphics cards and honestly shouldn't be buying new GPUs each year either. Anyone who's bought an i7 CPU in the last few years, be happy. You paid much better, your CPU is still among the best around and you'll likely get your money's worth. We'll be long past Skylake by the time our CPUs need replacing. We're in it for the long haul.
Most importantly
wait for Zen before making your doom and gloom statements. We don't know if it'll live up to the hype or what it'll be priced at. But you'll have the full choice when Zen releases. And even if Zen makes i7s look old hat... no worries. As mentioned above our i7s will be fine for a long while yet.
I will say that this most certainly will be difficult for folks who absolutely need to upgrade or build a new PC right now. Again, don't buy anything till Zen comes out and then look at buying a CPU/Mobo as a long term purchase. And there's still the option of buying older CPUs. Granted most of those have jumped up in price almost 50% (more than that if you count the great deal I got on mine). But there's still easier options. My brother bought an i5 4460 somewhat recently and that's one of the CPUs that has held it's price well. the original Skylake CPUs aren't that bad either. Buy one of those and feel good that it will last a long while. Or if Zen is any good, buy one of those.

R These aren't GPUs, so it's not the end of the world and there are other options.
