Intergalactic By Naughty Dog

So many threads on here - not just games - fall into the same tired, repetitious back and forth about ‘woke’ now. It’s incredibly tedious.

I couldn’t give a flying stuff if Neil Druckman has views (does he even?), the characters are whatever, etc. If I play the eventual game and I like it, great. If I don’t, then it’ll be down to gameplay/design, the story is dull, not to my taste, etc, not perceived ‘agenda’ of something that I literally know nothing about yet beyond a small video.

Why does it upset everyone all so much that they have to say the same thing repeatedly literally for years now.

I must be getting too old for this ****

The first one was very story driven too though? Do you mean you just didn't like the story in the second one? I feel like I'm missing something here.
What was it about the story that makes you think it's going to impact any of the other games going forward?

It's a story driven adventure series as much as anything else, while I wouldn't call the first part the best writing in the world it was executed very well and had excellent characters.

Regardless of Druckmann's political views, I think he's a hack when it comes to employing a good narrative, and he had a lot more creative control in part 2 than he did in 1. Compared to games which many could quite easily claim to have certain "politics" such as Disco Elysium or Baldur's Gate 3 (both of which are excellent), his entire approach is hamfisted and lacking in consistency.

because nearly everythings the same now - every protaganist has to be a "strong independent woman" - preferably "of colour", preferably gay. The "strong independent woman" should in no way be attractive in face or body. Villains should be white men if at all possible, preferably middle aged, preferably rich etc etc. Originality has gone out the window, as has good quality writing. As long as all the boxes are ticked and you have your monetisation platform in place then games are good to go.

It's the times we're in now though - whether it is 'woke' or otherwise, there seems to be a lot more forced inclusion these days in various outlets; and apparently there's even some funding for "DEI" or something - where one can only assume that whoever ponies up the dosh, has a bunch of tick boxes they expect to be filled.

When it's forced, it feels fake to most - and you've also got the mythical 'modern audience' that are being targeted, and I expect this minority are the most vocal about having representation for X, Y and Z.... Not sure if I'm correct, but I swear I saw there was a wheelchair bound character in R6 Siege - if that's correct, then I can kind of see why some people have a axe to grind, that would be a forced for the sake of box-ticking inclusion, rather than a fitting addition to the game.

We won't even go down the route of things being woke or "woke", as there is very much a difference.

But like lots of things - all the moaning and gnashing of teeth is just amplified by the internet, and will sound a lot worse than it seems. Take this trailer for example, people a already getting riled up and 'voting with their wallet' and they've not even seen the actual game yet! I've got no problem playing as a badass woman, Lara Croft on the PS was probably the first ass kicker many gamers played, but if they have to start bringing gender/pronouns/modern audience stuff in - then I'll certainly be a bit more critical of it, and will be watching to see what it's like; as that sort of stuff isn't really needed in the so-called escapism that gaming was/is.

But hey ho, people just want to be heard - so they will nail their colours to a post, and shout and wail; but probably still end up buying and playing it. My advice to you, if you get annoyed by it all - just ignore it, keep tabs on the release schedule, and buy it if you like the look

There are a few decades' worth of Strong Male Protagonist Rescues Attractive Damsel In Distress games if you can't bring yourself to play one with a female protagonist who you wouldn't/couldn't sleep with.

Whether the games industry at large has somewhat over-corrected from that course recently is up for some debate perhaps, but representation across all forms of media is a good thing and the types of characters you make reference to have been largely under-represented in gaming historically. You say originality has gone out the window, but it seems more like you simply can't accept that some games now have stories and characters that you are unable to relate to or empathise with.

Villains should be white men if at all possible, preferably middle aged, preferably rich
Well at least that's fairly realistic.

That's exactly what I meant.

While the game looks stunning, it's also very story driven and I didn't get on at all with the way it unfolded. I also find Druckmann very overrated, I'm aware many loved TLOU2, but it really wasn't for me and if that set the bar for the company going forward I've little interest.
Can I just say how refreshing it is to see someone just say "you know what, this probably isn't for me, but I'm sure some people will enjoy it".

Pretty sad reflection of the state of discourse around video games that this sort of post stands out as an exception.

It's the nutjobs who take to death threats that I cannot comprehend! The woman who voice/used the likeness for Abby had to come offline after abuse and whatnot - madness, as she was bang tidy

I have my reasons for not buying this game, I honestly didn't even know what it was until looking at this thread as I don't follow gaming events. I've voiced issues with other releases within an existing series pertaining to a change of direction such as DA:V, but I also clearly stated it wasn't the "woke" stuff so much as the approach to it that put me off, combined with many other factors. That said, Intergalactic is an entirely new IP, they can go in any direction they wish and I legitimately hope it ends up being fantastic and that people enjoy it. My main gripe is a lack of faith in Druckmann, if he wasn't involved I'd be far more tempted to give it a shot, but as it is I've already got a lot of games on my radar and not enough time to play most of them. I don't buy books from authors I don't get on with either, I might chat about the why but ultimately I move on.

I'm looking forward to the FF7: Rebirth release late Jan on PC, loved it on the PS5 but it had a number of hardware related issues. People complained about that being woke/dei etc too, and for the most ridiculous of reasons such as Tifa's (still very ample) breasts being smaller, or the fact Yuffie's shorts were actually buttoned up of all things.

Yuffie’s shorts are buttoned?! That’s it then no way I am playing that. Worlds gone mad.

Edit- just bought Rebirth as it’s 40% off on PSN right now.

Who actually cares? I know I don't. I'm not bothered if my character is gay or straight or non binary or even what colour skin they have. As long as the gameplay is good and it's fun to play then that's all that matters.

Unfortunately the trailer gives the impression that the game is a copy of Star Wars Outlaws, and that's a 7/10 game, which is typical for Ubislop, but would be a big disappointment for ND

Really? The trailer gave away all that, utter ********

That is some absolutely insane levels of deduction there.
