International Friendlies - England vs Norway/Belgium [May 26th - June 2nd 2012]

The commentary is just terrible (as usual), constantly reeling off reasons we should be happy.

"Roy Hodgson's reign as England manager: no goals conceded"

:o

Absolutely, but he would lay into our team far too much for ITV/BBC to consider it.

I think he'd be fair. Something desperately needed. Not sure if RM would give permission for anywhere but Portuguese TV I think.

I can't believe this analysis, we were shocking and it's like we were incredible according to these lot.

Not really, we haven't given them a sniff and have had all the best chances. This is the best way for England to play, do you think we can compete with the likes of Belgium in midfield? They can actually pass ..

So the best way for England to play is to give the ball away as much as possible, hoof it up when we do have it and hope for a chance to come?

Belgium haven't actually been fantastic going forward really have they...

Alright!

I can't believe that 'the right way' is considered the way they are playing today and no, I'm not going on a rather lose and play well rant ;)

You have watched England before? England can't string 5 passes together, that doesn't help if you want to play possession football

Belgium haven't been good going forwards because we've defended well. We're quite good at defending, give us the ball and it's all a bit dull

I'm 99% certain David Beckham is the only man on the planet that would even attempt to combine a shaved mullet with a moustache that looks straight out of Deadwood :p.

We can't string passes together because of the same so called world class players that get picked throughout the middle. Terry might (have one day been) be a good defender, but he doesn't play the ball out which is needed nowadays. You can't just hoof the ball up from deep in your own half and expect your front men to somehow control it and wait for everyone else to catch up. Gerrard's the same. They both play football that existed ten years ago. You have to pass the ball on the floor now and that means picking the players to do it.

You can't just say 'England can't string five passes together so we should just hoof it and hope that we can hang on'. Why not just pick the right players to do it, there are plenty out there who can hold the ball and play short passes. Gerrard certainly can't. It's also a symptom of having a 64 year old manager manage your team. We needed someone young and willing to change the way they work.

Who would you pick instead of Gerrard? Henderson who has one cap? I think people need to realise that no matter what shape/players we use, we will always struggle to play football at a high intensity (i.e. anywhere over the half way line) Capello tried every combination of players and there was no change

It's amusing to read all the comments about passing it on the floor and keeping possession etc. That is not how Roy has ever played football and ever will. You could put Xavi and Iniesta in the centre of this team and we'd still play the same football. This team already looks far tighter in the centre and at the back than it has done under previous managers but the flip side is we won't be as attack minded.

Hazard looks a lot like Ben Arfa I.e. lightweight, a bit scared/too lazy to get stuck in but very fast and skilful. Be interesting to see how he gets on first season but on this basis I don't particularly see him being on fire from the off. Will take a while to adapt.

It's not to do with Roy, these players aren't suited to that type of game, Hodgson is doing the right thing, this is our best chance.
