Internet nostalgia

Anyone from warez top site lists? used to go around in circles trying to find a download on the http and all the links would end up going back to the warez top lists and voting for the site on the list. You never could find any downloads. They used to do all sorts of html tricks like change the mouseover status text or prevent right click, so you would click and vote for their site. lol

FIFA 99 via dial up for team-up matches. Those were the glory days! Used to bug me tho if I couldn't get a game going and you would be there for 30mins trying to connect with the other person and vice versa.

Anyone also remember a website called launch.com? It was basically a streaming site for music videos. You would pick your songs in like a playlist manner and just enjoy. It was around late 2000/2001 when I first came across it.

The last chat room service I remember using was breathe.com. Ah memories :D

Yep. I remember endlessly trying to download the Age of Empires 2 demo, which was about 30mb, before the 2 hour window reset on the 56k.

Age of Empires 2 - those were the days! Early 2000 era. We would start a 6-player LAN at 9PM and the game was still going strong at 5AM. 5 of us chose to play as Franks because of their powerful paladins, then there was always 1 smart ass who would chose Saracens and pwn us all with their camels lol.

You mean breathe.net? They were my first dial-up ISP back in 1999! In year 2000, they offered unlimited 0800 access for a one-time fee of £50 but they went bust because of that. Nothing is free forever.

That was them! Yes breathe.net! How many different dial-up ISPs did we have back then? Lol. Freeserve was one of the best. Tiscali as well. I remember scouring for the cheapest and best deals for dial-up.

Now I cannot remember the name for the life of me. But there was this one company who were offering (and no word of a lie on this) unlimited dial-up for £25 a year! Yes a YEAR! Of course, they didn't last long. But it was the best deal ever! Must have been around 98/99 I think. Maybe 2000.

Free Internet access from the Uni, mostly via late nights in the physics department computer lab at UMIST, or the John Rylands Library next to my halls. Hotmail, before Microsoft bought them. Monochrome BBS. Godwars MUD.

I, too, remember GetRight! Similar programs were Go:Zilla (not to be confused with Mozilla!), and FlashGet, but some of these type of programs were spyware as well.

Are there many Netscape fanboys here? I was one for sure, then in 2002, Netscape became open-sourced as Mozilla. Pop-up blocker, tabbed browsing, add-ons, spell check. It was years ahead of Internet Exploder, although behind Opera, as Opera had tabbed browsing etc first. I skipped the original Firefox when that was new but jumped ship in 2006 when Firefox 2 came out. At the end of the day though, any of us using Firefox now, are still essentially Netscape kids :-)

Many an hour wasted playing UT DM and Clan CTF.
I have so many screen grabs of 0 deaths still saved from 2000-2004 :D

Throwing everything at getting 120fps in Q2 - faster graphics card, lower resolution, picmip 5, to get the extra frames for jumping further.

Oh and FOV 90.

Gaming on Jolt, Barrysworld, Wireplay and Novaworld.

BT's talk21.com was my original ISP on a 28.8K modem - I had my own second line on a DACS :(. I remember having to download a 63Mb Counter Strike patch over two nights using GoZilla. I miss the VIP levels from the early CS betas!

Never seen CWE so I looked it up and found this..

Was fun hearing all the talk about soundblasters in DOS games :D its too bad there there aren't any equivalent shows to this today.. and 'Click' dosn't really count because they don't go into this kind of 'detail' about tech stuff

For me it was probably around 2001 when I had an old machine passed down to me but back then I didn't do a lot but I do remember the Napster craze & the court case that soon ensued. Then 2002 / early 2003 came along and for me it was all about Runescape, Freewire / Limewire / Ares Galaxy & WinMX (who remembers that one!) Practially all my mates were also hooked to P2P networks back then it was insane.

Oh yeah and also trying to deter my younger sister from downloading & using Kazaa Media Desktop on my machine because of all the viruses & malware that it brought with it. Those were the good old 56K days - and I don't miss having to reconnect every 2 hours one bit, especially having to log out of Runescape right before a quest because of the impending disconnection or my Mum wanting to use the phone!

April 2004 arrived and so did 512K as well, the internet for me took a real turning point then!

Liam.

WinMX was a good one it had that Dos-like text theme which made it look more technical :D

It was also a really good one to use
