internet speed

Game servers might be being hammered, depends how many people got shiny new PCs / Consoles for Xmas.

I'd pause the downloads on his PC and try speedtest.net / fast.com to double check the connection that way.
checked there its like 11mbps orange light flashing and solid green at ethanet on bavk of pc

its BARN internet so ment to be 1000mbps
Just double the figures i gave then
Even if servers are busier than usual because it's Xmas
No way should take the amount of time
You mentioned
I haven't had any issues downloading off steam etc over Xmas

Not familiar with BARN Internet
So no idea what sort of router they give you
But shouldn't be that slow
Wired from router to pc isn't just a case of being faster
It's also usually lower latency
Which is what you want especially with fast paced shooters etc

The solid green light means theres a 100Mbps connection between the PC and the "extender"; if it was 1Gbps it would be solid Orange, if it was only a 10Mbps connection the light would be off.

The other flashing LED means its sending or recieving data.

So the "extender" has probably only got a 100Mbps port, not that its anywhere near maxing that out if you are only getting 11Mbps between the router and the "extender".

If the extender was 100Mbs
And they are measuring 11 on download speed
Might be they are mixing Mbs with MBs
11 MBs actual download speed would be about correct for 100Mbs connection
Lot of people do get megabits per second
And megabytes per second muddled up probably
Because isps use megabits per second
Most likely because it sounds a lot faster

Its possible but OP said he was getting 11Mbps when I suggested he tried speedtest.net or fast.com

I googled the size of fortnite and got answers ranging from 16 to 35 GB.

With a 100Mbps connection 35GB would take about 45 minutes to download.

With a 10Mbps connection that could take closer to 8 hours.

So I think its the connection between the router and the "extender" thats the problem but we don't know what type of extender it is or how its connected.

so if lights are good and means ive got 100 speed whrres my problem because it cant be from router must be pc issue? ill get the specs gor extender shortly

What happened to trying with the PC connected directly to the router? I wouldn't waste time faffing around with anything else. At least confirm first that the network card is capable of receiving 1Gbps speeds.

Post the make and model number of the "extender" because it isn't clear what you are using.

sx_turbo asked what router you are using?

Answer these questions please so people can help you. Since you only mention "an extender" as in a single item I'm going to assume you have an 802.11n 2.4Ghz-only Wi-Fi "booster" with a network socket on the bottom, which is likely the cause of all your problems.

moved pc to router used same cable as whats on my extender and i was getting 860mbps wifi 260ish after i changed the setting from 100 to 1gig on pc moved back to bedroom and same 15mbps , mkae of extender tp-link model tl-pa4010

Yes, that TP Link powerline kit is ancient and was low end even when it was launched. If you're just going 7m around a room then use a cable. The Wi-Fi speed changing from 11Mbps to 260Mbps after moving it across a room doesn't sound right though so either it was still connecting using the cable when you tested or there are walls in between the PC and the router. What router do you have?

genexis router , am just gonna run a cable unless anyone has any links to a good extender 1000mbps , its going through 2 walls so thats maybe why wifi shocking

drg7820 ? is there a way i can connect another router in my sons room with ethanet vable from that but the router should also improve wifi anround house ?

Yes you should be able to use a second router
As an access point
Both a wired and wifi access point
By running the ethernet to the room their pc is in
I use a few hauwei ax3 to do this
30 quid of Ebay and it's wifi 6

Unfamiliar with genexis routers
So don't know if there's any reason it wouldn't allow it
If you have any old routers laying around
You can test it
Should work but can't say 100% definitely

so update ive up dated my tp link to av 1000 tl-wpa7517 kit , got a green flashing light at router and on back of pc solid orange and flashing yellow/light orange , i’ve tried both wifi and wired and its getting the same 50mbps any more help be good

Powerline adapters are crap, ignore the headline figures - they're lies. They can work reasonably well for low bandwidth requirements but are very dependent on the wiring in your house. Having the adapters on different power circuits in your consumer unit for example will lead to a fairly terrible connection

What happened to the very sensible plan of running an ethernet cable?

av 1000 tl-wpa7517 kit
Why?

solid orange and flashing yellow/light orange
Just means the new kit has a 1Gb port

Congrats its 5 times faster than before a 35GB download will now "only" take approx an hour and a half...

There's not really anything you can do to improve the transfer rate between the adapters it is what it is...

I'd take them back get a refund and use the money to try to find a friendly spark / aerial installer that will run a long patch cable for you if you have decided you don't fancy doing it yourself.

You could get them to fit a network socket but based on other posts some don't know how to terminate them correctly so its a safer bet with a pre termintaed cable.
