I've been acquiring lots of holiday this year but work won't let me have any time off till late September (works moaned at me for having so much and then moaned at me for trying to use it :(). Any how I've started looking at other jobs but if they won't give me time off for holiday, they're not likely to give me time off for interviewing. So where do I stand ?

What? You expect your employer to give you time off for interviews at other employers?

When you say acquiring, do you mean in lieu of overtime pay?

Of course I expect time off, how else am I supposed to go with out phoning in sick, I don't mind if it comes out my holiday. TBH if they ask I'm going to tell them it really doesn't bother me

yeah time in lieau, so far I have 28.5 days

If they won't give you your holidays until September, then there's not much you do besides taking time off sick in order to attend interviews. This however leaves you open to disciplinary action should they find out.

It's a bit cheeky to expect to get time off earlier than they can give it to you in order to find another job though, if that's what you've been telling them when asking for time off.

If you are serious about getting another job and they are not going to give you any time off at the time of an interview (dont actually tell them you are going for an interview though) then just pull a sickie. Not exactly the nicest thing to do to the company you are working for but if you are looking to move on and it will ultimately benefit you in the future I would just do it.

I thought there was some kind of obligation to let you have time off for interviews? Or perhaps that is not the case.

Rather than taking a full day, try asking them for a few hours at the start/end of the day to attend an appointment. If they press for details tell them you're off to the clap clinic.

Edit: Well fiddle-dee-dee! Since posting this I've just opened a letter that arrived in todays post. I've been invited to an interview for a merchant navy cadetship this Tuesday at Fleetwood. Needless to say that's nowhere near enough notice for me to get the day off from my employer. What to do...

I don't like doing sickies, had to do it for an interview I had about 2 weeks ago and turned down another one today as they wanted me to travel miles at short notice.

We're only allowed one person off a day for the next 2 months in our whole department of about 15 as it's the busiest time of the year.

The deal at my job (council) is we are given time off for interviews without having to take leave. down side, they know you're looking for a new job. I only had one interview there in 4 years with another council and the other council even covered all my travel costs.

Phone in with a domestic issue. Burst pipe, smashed window, etc. :)

i think they only have to give you time off for interviews if they've notified you of compulsory redundancy within the next 6 months.

It's never been a problem in the past as I've always got holiday when I've asked - As I'm being slightly forced into having to do a sickie it doesn't quite seem as bad. Although what sort of disciplinary would you expect to receive for being caught doing a strategic sickie ?

Verbal warning at the very most.

Just call in a sicky. I would be fuming if my employer would be telling me when I can or cant book my holidays.

Some employers think that holiday are just a inconvience for them.

your lucky if you can ask for holiday. at Sainsburys we have to book all our holiday(or most of it) a year in advance.

and trying to change it is a nightmare

All of December is free so I decided to book the whole of December off and got told I couldn't so I have all this holiday and no way of using it. What makes it worse we don't get overtime we get time in lieu which means I just keep accumulating more :-/
