iOS 4.0 has been released!

Updated my 3gs to os4 on Thursday, all seemed to go well with the update, all apps etc seem to work fine but when on a call after around 5mins or so the phone now cuts out and goes to a black screen with just the apple logo, the phone switches back on after a few seconds but network is lost,it searches and finds the network again but call has obviously been lost.

It's beginning to really annoy me now,has anyone experienced anything similar since the update?

edit/ I'm on O2 .

Yes I had the same happen. I was calling voice mail and after a few seconds the call ended my screen went black then it rebooted, but its only happened the once and its been fine since.

Mine only seems to do it when on a call and after approx 6-7 mins, phoned 02 y'day and apparently there have been a lot of reported problems since the update regarding network loss, they suggested a software reset when connected to itunes which involves holding the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears, did this but it hasn't resolved the problem. Will get back onto them.

Another 3GS upgrader. Mine came from the naughty corner but I couldn't be bothered with that any more, so I wiped the slate clean with a DFU restore and everything's gone fine so far (except my iTunes library didn't get restored - Grrr :().

Haven't tried a call with it yet so don't know if I'll get the reboot of doom.

Had a nightmare upgrading my 3g 16. for 2 days iTunes wouldn't connect, then my iphone started being reluctant to connect via USB. When I thought I'd fixed that the update finally started. Then the phone failed to connect when it had done the upgrade and I was waiting for the 'restore' Swapping USB ports finally got the phone recognised and the resstore worked.

I find the 'phone feels a bit nipier most of the time, but the memory allocation has gone through the roof. I used to have about 32 to 38 mbytes free after a restart, now I never have more than 5mbytes free, and the free memory' app I've been using is useless. I did wonder if battery life had taken a dive, but I think I've been usng the phone more since the upgrade so suspect it's about the same really.

My gmail is now in 'conversation' view, which I dislike but at least it is consistent with the web mail version.

I like the 'apps in folders' and some of the new Icons.

I have an old Ipod dock DAB radio that used to display a warning when Iphone was docked, about the device not supporting iphone. You could dismiss the message and just put up with the RF interference. The message is different now and the phone doesn't seem to charge, whch it used to do. Why do they have to meddle?

f only they could fix O2's awfull coverage...........

am i the only one who doesnt like the new multi tasking?

i always forget about it and at the end of the day i have about 50 apps running. why couldnt they just make it so you can text 'in app' or have music playing instead of being able to 'minimize'.

After reading all of these stories I'm really worried about upgrading my 3GS to ios4, but want to try it!

Is there any way to fully "image" my whole phone, as well as backup, to be able to revert to the exact way mine is now on 3.1.2 if the need arose?

Thats the idea with the backup. It goes back how it was...

Upgraded my 3GS a couple of weeks ago now and although I'm loving having folders (all my apps are now on jus the one screen), there's a couple of things I'm not happy about:

1. Phone rebooting after a while on a call. I've had it a couple of times now and it's starting to get on my nerves! If it does it again I'll be on the phone to O2 to complain!

2. Multitasking - It's all well and good but it's reliant on developers recompiling their apps, and probably 75% of mine still haven't been! When apps do get recompiled I've found an irritating little side effect. Take Facebook or the built in email app for example, previously you'd load the app and as it would know you'd just loaded it, it would automatically poll for any updates. Multitasking now means that the app just thinks it's never stopped running and when you switch back to an app you have to manually force a refresh to get any new updates. It's only a little thing but something which I find annoying.

This may have already been mentioned...

I'm a 3GS user and have found that iOS 4.0 has seriously worsened my battery life. Is anyone else having the same problem? Does closing the in-memory apps help rememdy battery usage (as I've only started doing that today as it happens)?

I can't tell really, my 3GS battery seems to be getting worse and worse anyway.

I suspect with backgrounding going on it has decreased, but thats life!

Download the .ipsw file (the iPhone firmware) for your device manually.

Once you've downloaded it, just hold shift when clicking Restore/Update in iTunes and pick the location of the firmware.

That should bypass the iTunes downloading process and install without issue.

Would this same process work for a roll back to 3.1.3?

My battery is much better than it was on iOS3.
