iOS4 - iPhone 3G

Argh, I know have a new problem - if someone calls me and I swipe to answer the phone just goes back to sleep and I can't hear anything. Has been happening all day so now I can only call people back!

I am also having terrible problems with lag when switching apps and writing text messages. Very disappointed.

I've done a clean backup/restore, taking all the naughty stuff off and it's running pretty fast/smooth - much better than before. Miss wallpapers/rotation lock though :(

Writing emails now is pretty much pointless. The lag between character presses is huge and trying to switch between my two email accounts is pointless. Not happy with this update at all. Sluggish and unusable really.

iOS4 deleted all my contacts and messages after telling me it had made a backup!! But it was not in the mobilesync folder so the only backup I have is from an old harddrive in Feb 2010 cos apple overwrites each time it syncs

EDIT: having checked the interwebs seems to have happened to a fair few people.

Very sluggish for me. I've tried powering off and I've tried resetting by holding the power and home button, neither made any noticeable improvements to the way this thing is operating. Like some of you guys, it's a 3G 8GB model. My phone worked perfectly fine before the update and this is very, very frustrating, typing a text takes forever and a day to complete because the keyboard is now rather sluggish to respond to my presses.

I'm not impressed and I hope enough people complain to Apple for them to see that it's a problem, otherwise the majority of us are going to be stuck with phones that are barely worth using, and I don't know about you guys but I don't really have £400+ for a new iPhone.

Not happy; Angry Birds is now laggy. :p
Seriously though, you may think I jest, there has to be something wrong with OS4 if the No1 app (and not that ram intensive) now lags.

I have system manager app on my 3G and before updating to OS4, a quick press of the "Free Memory" button would free up a minimum of 40mb's, sometimes even 50mb's. Now I am lucky to get over 20mb's free.
This is the same with turning the phone on and off, go into system manager to check ram and it is around 23mb's.

:D Hmm thinking about it that could be worse than lag, had you three starred all the new levels too? OOOOhhhhhhh. I feel for you. :p

So after a few more checks OS4 has halved the ammount of free ram on my 3G to a max of 23mb's. What is all that about?
Is this the normal free ram for OS4?
Surely not all apps can run ok with that ram, as it is recommended to free up ram before starting certain apps?
Anyone?

And again lol creed, sorry about your scores mate. :)

Well chuffed, my 3G replacement from AppleCare has 3.1.3 on it and I had a fairly current backup. Back to a performing phone (relatively). :D

If today is anything to go by battery life is at least 15% worse for me. Fully charged over night, went to work (general use and music) and just got home in time to dock it before the battery ran out.

Another 3G user with a VERY laggy IOS4 install..... not happy as it's causing me massive problems with email.
I have 3 accounts on it and they are very patchy in updating. Just spent 4 days out of the office and it didn't pull emails down at all until I wiped every email account and re-set them up again. Then, nothing updating again until I got home and it suddenly sprung into life and downloaded emails from all 3 accounts.
The phone in general is now laggy, takes ages to search on maps, angry birds is choppier than a choppy thing.
My view is they should have said it could cause issues and warned against doing it on a 3G or they should have made an easy downgrade route, rather than a near hack to do it.

You'd almost think it was a way of getting people up upgrade their out of contract older handsets to a newer model..... or is that too cynical?

I downloaded one of those free memory apps. I perpetually have less than 5MB free on my 3G - no wonder it's so slow. When I switch between multiple apps even music played via the iPod stutters. Apple shouldn't have released this for the 3G - it obviously doesn't have enough memory. Might do the downgrade now in case it becomes impossible.

I'm about to try a restore to see if that helps. Safari is now crashing with more than 3 tabs open, and with 3 open text input becomes impossible. The entire phone is just unusable in this state.

I've also noticed a dip in performance in regards to battery life. My phone charge all of last night up until around 11 this morning. I've left it on my desk all day, I've sent a grand total of 3 texts all day and no phonecalls and the battery looked to be around 70%... Something not right with that at all, I'll try it again for the rest of the week and if it's no better I think I'll be going back to the Apple store. For an update to render my phone as more of a hinderance than a convenience is appalling. Sending a text has now become a nightmare and it is 100% to do with the suggestions, as soon as they pop up everything goes incredibly slow and I have to wait several seconds before my phone will actually respond to any key presses.

I'd try a restore but at the moment my iPhone has some purchased songs that are not in my iTunes library, and for some reason the transfer purchases button is doing absolutely sweet f.a.

Although, if Apple to reduce iOS4's memory footprint in future releases we may be able to run it on the 3G.

Still loving being back on 3.1.3, it's a pleasure to use after suffering with iOS4 for a week and I really don't miss the minor features from the latest version. Folders/email threads really aren't worth the performance hit.

Upgraded my 32gb 3Gs yesterday and it seems a little quicker and the little tweaks have made slight improvements to the every usage :)
