iOS6 Changing how you see the world

iTunes has just offered me iOS6 for my 3GS. I've said no for the time being. Think I'll be waiting until they sort this mess out!

So they took the call to take the hit and as someone else so eloquently put it, spend some of the "goodwill" they had in the bank by releasing a shoddy product. But it was better to take the hit now, rather than potentially fall further behind or release a poor product once mapping had already become the killer feature for most users. This fiasco is bad for Apple, but it's not ciritcal. The shear number of sales seems to indicate that this is not a massive problem for most users.

I believe it's me you're quoting from another thread, and yes, Apple can absorb the hit on this one I don't think there is any doubt about that.

For the highly competitive, profit maximizing monster that Apple is today it makes absolute sense to control your own mapping service. The huge advertising potential plus the chance to stick it to Google at the same time make it a no-brainer. On the flip side it should open the door to some nicely integrated features of future iOS versions, too.

I believe apple will now be working 100% to catch up with google. I don't believe this though will result in any significant increase in their app within the next 9 to 12 months. We as the users are caught in the middle. In the long run this should be a good thing, as goggle will hopefully have a strong competitor. In the short and mid term we have to suffer with a critically flawed mapping app.

I think 'caught in the middle' is putting it mildly - we're more like collateral. Apple of yesteryear pretty much built their reputation on delivering high quality, integrated software and hardware products. That's fast becoming a distant memory. It's hard to watch Jony Ive waxing lyrical about how obsessive they are about the design of the new iPhone and delivering a quality product without wishing somebody paid as much attention to the software side of things.

I have to say it, but would maps have been released in this state if Steve Jobs was about? He was anal about everything and made the iPhone OS simple and it worked great.

WTF Apple this is shocking. I generally defend apple phones as being the best due to the tight integration and mature features. I just assumed that all the bad news was just a few people making noise.

I am now stuck with Apple maps and the city where I live is completely covered in cloud on satellite view! You can only see a couple of roads!!

The main river through town is filled in half way down and apparently doesn't exit to the sea!

The large park next to my house is missing and the city roads look sparse :(

All this within 5 minutes of launching the maps program to get some information. Couldn't see the item in town on maps so had a look at satellite view and can't even see the cloud thanks to cloud!!!

Just had another app update and yet another change log to include local searches for stuff. That several apps that have included the feature since ios6 was released. Was there an issue with google maps data being used for 3rd part apps?

Hardly as easy as an in app reporting tool, you can use drop pin and the like.

I agree it should off been tested more, a lot of these things could off been sorted out easily enough with a few testers from each city.

What I don't get is apple map uses yelp, but there's plenty of business on yelp, which don't show up on apple maps. That's what I don't get.

Another thing I don't get is that my business isn't even on Yelp and listed in maps...

Tim Cook apologizes for Maps mess:

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Apple’s CEO

So they're admitting a failure?

I'm fairly sure that one of the main reasons they rushed iMaps in was because of the imminent Windows 8 launch. Nokia's Maps app will most likely be superior to anything on the market.

This may have already been answered, but is it possible to install iOS 5 on the iPhone 5?
I very much doubt it. There's an install file for each device so I'd be surprised if one was produced for the iPhone 5 seeing as it shipped with iOS6.
