Can anyone who has upgraded their OS on the iPhone 4 (non-S version) comment on how the usability/speed is compared to iOS 6.1.3? Is the 'upgrade' worthwhile?

EDIT: Mods please move to the Apple software section.

Yes updated to ios7 last night on my iphone 4 and mostly all good so far

Perhaps slightly slower but certainly not annoyingly so

Only annoyance for me is loss of Podcasts in "music"

Updated an old iPhone I use as a spare, personally I don't think people should bother. It's not powerful enough and it's pretty painful at times waiting for things, plus it's not that smooth scrolling around. Also it's lacking some of the major iOS7 features like dynamic backgrounds, Air Drop etc.

Apple should have omitted the 4 from this release IMO.

Two completely contrasting opinions  Nismo do you have a load of apps open in the background?

No, this is straight after the update.

Don't get me wrong, it's "usable" but feels severely crippled and is obvious the hardware is now struggling.

Also bear in mind I'm used to the speed of the 5, so even iOS6 felt sluggish to me on the 4, personally iOS 7 feels immediately worse though performance-wise.

OK, that helps, so maybe I won't get the same shock as I only have the 3G and 4.

Anyone tried a downgrade back to iOS 6.1.3? The instructions on the internet seem to be very straight forward, so if someone can confirm the rollback works, then there's no harm in me trying the new one ;)

Update - been using it on commute et this morning and still finding it fine on the 4

In fact my signal at work seems better certainly more consistant

I have the 4 and I'm not even going to bother with ios7, my phone is slow enough as it is :(

I inherited my wife's 4 and bought her the 5 a while ago as her 4 was incredibly slow and buggy. Did a factory reset and works perfectly for me, I love it :D So try the hard reset then restore.

Was contemplating putting it on my mums iphone4 but tbh her phone really struggles on ios6 as it is and if i put ios7 on it, it will probably render it near unuseable.

Doesnt matter anyhow as im getting her the 5S in the next few weeks to replace the iphone4 she has at the moment.

Yas, see my comment above. It seems to me a slow iphone 4 (on iOS 6) is just due to build up of crap over time. A factory reset really did the trick for me and I actually have no complaints about the 4 (coming from a Nokia 820).

Podcasts got semi-moved in iOS6, but you could access them by going to genres IIRC. I take it all mention is gone from Music now?

I prefer the dedicated Podcasts app, although my bug-bear is it has a tendancy to overrule iTunes and stop updating the podcast subscriptions because you "haven't listened to them in a while". This was annoying if you listen to them in-car, or on iTunes because the play count never used to carry over.

Many times I'd be thinking "why hasn't my podcast updated in ages?", only to check iTunes settings.. think "nothing abnormal here", then check the Podcast app on device and see that sodding message

I hope iTunes 11 sorts this.

Put it on my 4 and there is no difference I can see. It's actually faster in general use I'd say. This is compared to my heavily modified jailbroken 6.0 install however.

However, I don't multitask more than messages/whatsapp/spotify open at once, so I don't really give the phone much work to do.

Ive done the factory reset on my mums iphone4 and started from scratch, hasnt made a blind bit of difference. Still clunky and choppy on ios6.

Installed it last night on my 32GB iP4 and had no problems, In some instances it seems to be faster, there is a slight delay with some things like the icons coming into view after and unlock due to the animation it now does, I'm sure its quicker on the newer phones but nothing that would make me revert to iOS 6.

Yep, i may hang fire till i get her a 5S in a few weeks time then try ios7 on the iphone4 and see if its any better or worse.

Thanks to Apple's binding of security patches to general operating system updates, those choosing not to upgrade should take into consideration that you're running a operating system riddled with known security holes.
