Ipad 2 issues anyone? backlight bleeding?

It is an extremely common problem. Apple have cocked up quite badly.

I've been quite lucky though, mine has TINY bit of backlight bleed at the bottom, but you literally cannot notice it unless you deliberately start looking at funny angles on max brightness on a black screen.

I wont bother getting it exchanged for that, nearly all LCD screens are the same.

So there's an issue which you can only see when you display something at maximum brightness in a "pitch dark room".

How often do you plan on doing that?

I can see it at the default brightness on a black screen. You don't need to be in a pitch black room either, you see a slight yellow tinge to the blacks displayed on screen.

Friend works for apple and he told me that this is a big problem with ipad 2's. Apple have a reserve stock in all stores to replace faulty units.

Just got mine, for those saying is it as bad as people say....yes, yes it is. will be taking it back tomorrow :)

google search "black image"

black 32gb wifi. i called the store, they said to bring it in and they'll replace as they keep spares.

I bought 2 though (one for a friends) he said to try his in case that needs to go back too!

We'll mine exhibits some clear evidence of backlight bleeding, really considering returning it. The only issue is I'm about 3 hours away from my nearest Apple store.

Might sell the unit so someone with a store nearer them can return it or look at returning direct to Apple via post.

I returned my iPad 2 yesterday as it had backlight bleed and a dead pixel. I asked the staff if I could return it for backlight bleed only, she seemed confused, rang someone then returned to tell me they consider backlight bleed returns on a case by case basis, but would accept returns.

Every replacement iPad she brought out had scratches and marks on the rear case, we went through 4 replacements before we found one with marks, but marks that she could wipe off. I had been there over an hour by that time.

Got home only to discover this 5th offering has a loose patch on the black seal between the glass and the aluminium.....

Not happy at all!

Does anyone have any idea just how widespread this problem is? I am currently trying to decide between an iPad 2 and Android offerings by Motorola and Asus and this, quite frankly, may influence my final decision (along with whether or not I can be bothered to wait for stock, amongst other things).

My gut feeling is that the majority are OK, or else require abnormal settings and conditions to see anything, whilst a relatively small number exhibit any serious problem under normal conditions. Though clearly some of the dodgy ones do come in batches. I mean, reports such as have been posted here are alarming but I do notice this thread is not all that long. There is a rather longer thread on Apple's own forums, though I assume that is not just for the UK.

I have played with a few display models and all have seemed OK, though store lighting almost certainly is a factor and I have no idea how many were rejected for that purpose. Also, some Youtube vids have shown them in low lighting and no obvious problems are visible. Finally, I have not personally seen any reports in mainstream news of them being returned in droves.

So what do you reckon? Is this just a handful of dodgy ones that just happen to hang around in packs or am I almost certain to be disappointed if I take the plunge and purchase my first ever Apple product?
