iPad Mini...

Biggest waste of money
Biggest troll

I'm used to one and I was actually surprised how good the screen on the mini was, it's not even nearly as bad as some people suggest.

Overall the device seems excellent.
A lot of the comments about the screen seem to be coming from those who haven't even seen one. I'm finding that at work "oh, the iPad mini is rubbish, it doesn't have retina". I ask "Have you seen it?" and the reply is "no, but my mate who knows about computers said it's rubbish".

I've tried one and think it's perfectly acceptable and very usable. The smaller physical size must mean that the pixel density is higher than the non retina iPad and it certainly looked nice and sharp to my eyes.

Having bought my kids minis for Christmas I think the size is absolutely perfect, especially for kids or travelling. If I was in the market for a tablet I'd consider one over a full size ipad (actually I'd probably get something Android but that's not the point).

So I am thinking about iPad vs iPad Mini and am torn which to get. I see advantages and disadvantages of both but is it worth getting the mini now or wait until the next update. Will there be an update soon?

I have played with them side by side in various stores and I like both. I will probably be using it more as either a travel companion loaded with films/music/ebooks or as a handy ebook reader for programming books while I am working to compliment the mountains of programming books that I have.

I know both pieces of kit are fairly pricey so I want to ensure I get the right one before I make that final decision and actually part with my cash.

So I will also need a nice stand any recommendations on this as well for either?

If it helps, I've had the iPad 1, iPad 2 and just got the iPad mini.

I was skeptical at first about whether or not i'd enjoy the smaller platform and thought I might miss the extra screen size.

After a week of using the mini, I can safely say that I much prefer 7.9" over 10". When using it, absolutely nothing is taken away from you for having a smaller screen. The battery lasts longer, it's nicer to hold, it's light, it's portable and the screen is more than adequate.

I never had an iPad with a retina display but I did have the iPhone 4 with one. I really don't know how anyone could complain about the minis screen. Sure, you can see pixels if you hold it 4 inches in front of your face but so what? When operating it normally, the screen is much sharper, brighter and more colourful than any non-Apple product.

It's a shame the mini doesn't have retina, but it really is OK. I agree, most people slating them haven't actually used one, just basing comments on something they've read on the internet. The form factor is brilliant though, and feels extremely high quality.

I'll prob replace my iPad2 with a retina mini when/if they come out.

These comments about the screen being rubbish is utter tosh.

I have an iPad 4 myself and bought my girlfriend an iPad Mini for Xmas, after playing with the Mini, anyone who complains about the screen being rubbish is really scraping the barrel for complaints.

I love how Apple have clearly won people over with this whole 'Retina' terminology as well, the iFan Bois love to throw it around, makes me cringe.

The only issue for me is that at 1024px wide it really is very close to being a problem for internet browsing. Many sites now use 1024 pixels as the minimum width which can cause issues with screens only 1024px wide. 1280 is usually my minimum for a larger device (and most new smartphones are around that now...)

Have your eyes checked mate, the screen is horrible.

The quality/feel is far superior compared with the "normal" iPad. Basically, the mini is how the iPad should be and probably will be with the iPad 5 or whatever they decide to call it.

The screen on the mini is horrible though. Total failure. Once you become accustomed to the higher resolution/pixel density you just can't look at it in the same way ever again. It reminds me of the feeling I got when I had to turn on an old iPhone 3G after I became accustomed to the iPhone 4+ screen.

The stock market seems to agree as well. The "geniuses" over at Apple seem to find it difficult to understand that once people get accustomed to something a new reference point is created and everything is then judged/evaluate relative to that reference point. Well, a 30% drop in their market cap will nudge them I guess.

The screen is a long, long way from being 'horrible', what utter tosh.

I can clearly see the difference between a 'retina' screen and the iPad mini screen, and obviously I prefer the former.

However, when all is said and done in normal use the difference isn't that big (it's actually rather small), and the form factor and great design of the mini makes it an excellent product by itself.

I'd read a lot about it before seeing one myself, and I was expecting the screen to be somewhat poor, especially as I'm used to the retina screens, but I was left scratching my head as to what exactly the problem is with the screen on the mini; it's fine.

I don't have much experience of an iPad mini but I do struggle to believe the screen is poor also. I use an iPad 2 daily and I've always found the screen clear and easy to read/use.

Granted the screen is smaller on the iPad mini but in regards to screen clarity alone, the iPad mini has 23% more ppi than the iPad 2 (163ppi vs 132ppi). Maybe it's the size of the screen that's the issue here for some owners, and not the quality/clarity.

If that's the case, then maybe those who are complaining should really have considered the larger iPad. We had to get my Grandmother a 23" screen the other week, as she was beginning to find the 19" a bit too small... (same resolution FYI)

It would be interesting to know what comments people made about the IPAD2 screen when that came out. More than likely the same people calling this screen crap now.

I find the screen fine on it to be honest. Yes it's not as good as the IPAD4 but then it wasn't meant to be that price point. It will be interesting to see when they release a retina IPAD mini what price it will be.

Personally am used to the retina screen of my iPhone and iPad 3 which is why I can tell straight away. Wouldn't call the screen poor, probably average. When I bought mine and was lying in draw for about a week as was considering sending it back but thought I'd give it a try and really like it. Always felt the other iPad was a bit heavy and big for always carrying around whereas this fits into my jacket pocket and also my wife's smaller bag easily and isn't really heavy. Also looks and feels so classy and feels like a premium product.

They want to make a good margin on it hence why they haven't put it in but also need to consider size and weight as well. The size and weight are spot on for me but I hope they don't release an upgrade too quickly like they did for iPad 3 to iPad 4!!

On the flip side, the haters said there was no difference between the iPad2 and iPad with retina display when that came out, but are quick to slate the iPad mini for not having a retina display.

iPad mini sales have been massive, so certainly not a 'total fail', Apple will certainly have a new wave of customers when/if they release the mini with a retina display in the coming months.

I own an iMac, a MBP with retina display, iPhone 5, and an iPad2 and it certainly doesn't bother me flicking between the devices. The MBP display is incredible though.

Massively tempted to get one of these, I've used one in a store and the screen is not that bad but its still just not as good as a retina display. I've got a retina display on all my devices now and to go and buy one without doesn't make much sense, plus there are rumours that a retina iPad mini may appear in the spring - how likley is that?

As your so obsessed with retina just buy some retina goggles then it will be win win!

On the flipside of that as a normal consumer the iPad2 screen was the exact reason I didnt want one. Only the retina implementation and lack of blur (benchmark being angry birds) made the iPAD jump into the desirable product range to me as a iPhone4 owner at the time.

Which haters were they anyway? Ones that couldn't tell the difference between the iPads but noticed the Mini which kinda sits in the middle in terms of quality? Do these people even exist - they must have got an eyepad to correct the vision issues they had on previous occasions.

EDIT: I assume the haters are iPad Mini haters?

Garbage. I've owned an iP4 and currently have an iP5 and iPad 3rd gen, and I have zero issues using my GFs mini. In fact, I'd rather use that than my own iPad. The screen on the mini is great quality.

God knows what made you think it was "total failure", perhaps you still had the protective shipping film on it? :p
