iPad Mini...

Had a play on a mini the other day and the screen did not feel as small or cramped as I thought it would, I could tell it wasnt as sharp as the retina screen but it wasn't a glaring difference. Really tempted to see what the next update brings and swap my ipad 3 for one.

Most normal consumers wouldn't even give the screen resolution a second thought, they would have purchased one as it is a desirable product regardless.... The mini has sold well, only a minority of potential customers would have deferred due to a lack of 'retina' implementation - some of which would frequent this forum!

At a glance, there wouldn't have been much difference between an iPad 2 and an iPad with retina display to some people. Generally people who own neither, or those feeling the need to justify why they haven't upgraded to the latest/greatest iDevice.

The 'haters' are the people who are generally quick to comment on a product short comings just because of the brand, rather than spending some considerable time with a product before making a decision.

But yes, when 'retina' displays are starting to become the 'norm' in Apple's (mobile) product line up, some users/critics will see the mini as a step in the wrong direction.

Yes that was my take on haters but your use of it didn't really strike any chords of familiarity as the iPad screen differences is one usually picked up but reading your post again I see your point, no difference as in its no better would be something the blind or haters would coin.

It's typical Apple I guess get the volume into the core parts to drop piece price then they can roll retina in at the same RRP. By Nov no doubt we'll have iPad Mini with retina in the stores.

Haha, I was one. I bought an iPod touch instead (mainly for portability - taking it out and about. But I rarely do for fear of getting mugged and it being nicked). Now wish I'd got the mini as the 4" screen is still too small for decent gaming. Going to get the next mini regardless of it being retina or not.

I just hope it doesn't take til November for the next iteration!

I wouldn't be surprised if it's here within the next 4-6 months or so tbh.

I'll certainly look to replace my iPad2 with a 2nd generation mini - whenever that may be. I was sceptical over the size of the mini, but it does seem to make more sense. Full sized iPad can feel slightly cumbersome at times.

Nice middle ground between my iPhone 5 and 15" retina MBP :p
 
The iPad sat in the middle of those is more like increasing the screen size each time to be fair if the top end is a 15" MBP

How 'snappy' does it feel? If it feels a little on the slow side, that would really put me off, but the price, size and look all seem very tempting.
 
Been using mine to view PDFs and PowerPoints through iBooks for my exams. Really nice companion to use for making notes. Saves from looking up and down and up and down from a laptop screen. Having the iPad on the same level as the page is great.
 
Absolutely love mine, using it everyday and far more than I used the iPad 2 which I also used everyday. Doing a lot more reading and research on the mini. Also taking it with me.

Genuinely couldn't go back to the full size iPad now.
 
had a third attempt with one in store today

and just couldn't get past the low res screen after using an Ipad 3 for months

especially on the default-demo video content - looked particularly low res :( wheras my wifes Ipad 3 looks pin pin sharp

I think for the small saving its not worth it - and I can live with the extra weight I suppose :)

Whilst I haven't managed to see a demo of it on the Mini (only general browsing), Plants vs. Zombies on the iPad 3 just looks immense, you forget you are looking at a digital screen and it almost looks printed on.
 
Picked one up yesterday. Size, weight, build quality etc. are great but the screen quality isn't up to much TBH. Text quality on websites in portrait mode is especially bad.
Overall I think it's pretty good. If they add a retina display to next years model it would be the perfect consumption device.
 
It's going to need a chip upgrade to have retina display. I don't know if even the A6 will suffice. Maybe A6X will be in iPad mini and A7X in iPad 5 this year?
 
I have an iPad 4 and the Wife got a Mini for Christmas and providing the next Mini gets the same specs as the normal iPad i.e. Retina, CPU and Memory I'll be switching to a Mini as I find it the perfect size and you really don't lose anything stepping down in screen size :)
 
Very impressed. The mothership and gf now both have their mini's and love them, been an expensive Christmas, but now they won't be fighting over my tablet. :)
