iPhone 2.0.1 Released

of topic a bit but yes battery life is indeed a strain... particularly if like me you want to use the ipod function, leave wifi and bluetooth on 24/7 and make the odd call.... they really should have opted for more operating life over the new slimmer size...

anyway fixes wise it does appear to have fixed a problem i had with the tilt recognition where i would take the phone away from my head to end a call but the screen would stay blank despite much motion (read shaking the hell out of it) to bring it back to life. thanks apple! still having used apple hardware for the past 5 years i dont think its the pinnacle of their design skills... its too single user orientated and dumped down for my liking given that its their vision of how to use it or nothing at all. as i have been using a blackberry system (work provided) for the past 12 months i find it frustrating that you cant tailor it in a custom way to suit your own taste/needs...

like ringtones as an example... why make it impossible to add your own without having to go a third party route! just painfully awkward where it should be one of the perks of a personalised interface like owning a mac is still despite its overall simplicity for the inexperienced....

ill sit down now and shut up so anyway on with the debate...

=)

I had to write down a number onto paper then manually enter it into a text message to send a mate a a phone number the other day.

Pathetic

Picking up on that point...
If you are using a Mac, and all Macs come with iLife, you have Garageband which creates ringtones from any song you give it.

Texting sometimes is really slow since the update. Literally takes 2 seconds to process each letter :S
Last Friday I bumped into a work colleague using his iPhone and I was like "oh I've had one too, you got any issues?" and his answer was no as he had bought his phone a few days ago and just had to upgrade to 2.0.1.

I asked how he coped with the some of the more obvious issues as sms text lag and he didn't know what I was on about. So I demonstrated it to him and he thought that was normal and part of the system lol

Yup, back for me as well. There must be something that triggers it.
+1

and my data connection seems to have gone to poo...

apple really have broken their "it just works" tagline :( - maybe they simply tried to do too much with the 3G?

lets hope to god they dont start being this lapse with macs - that would be unforgivable

You don't need a third party app for ringtones, just itunes:confused:

Had my iPhone replaced at the weekend due to a crack in the case at the back - I was speaking with the tech's about battery life and they all but confirmed 2.1 would include battery fix and that 2.0.1 did have any battery related fixes in it.

Posted on Infinite Loop's site.

Supposedly, the "problem is affecting 2% to 3% of iPhone traffic," which doesn't seem so bad, as long as no one else buys an iPhone. The real problem for Apple will be if the firmware upgrade doesn't work. As it stands, we are currently at the second step in a process of customer service that will be familiar to longtime Mac users.

1. There is a problem with an Apple product.
2. Apple won't admit to it.
3. Someone threatens legal action.
4. Apple does a recall.

Welcome to the club, iPhone users.

Hope to god something gets done about this either way, firmware fix or re-call. The latter not good for Apple & ourselves as we'd be without our phones for a few days i'd guess.

Unfortunately I seem to be able to bring this phone to it's knees by having the iPod playing and a few safari windows open.. Text input becomes laggy and music starts skipping :(

One of the Apple websites that I frequently peruse at home mentioned the removal of Push Notifications in 2.0.1's successor. I wonder if that is the cause? Something is obviously munching away at CPU cycles somewhere and I feel its more than one feature.

I thought the exact same thing, saw the update 15 minutes before I had to go to work and thought ah that wont take 2 seconds to update, update is still on hold on my itunes like 3 days later!

It's the entire firmware, it doesn't just update parts, but reflash the whole thing. Like the PS3 does.

It's not the push e-mail they removed it is the facility for developers to use push notifications instead of background tasks.

e.g. MSN couldn't run as a mackground task, but they could use Apple's servers to 'push' a notification out to the device instead.
This wasn't due for release until sept anyway.

To those who are concerned about the iPhone OS and it's limitations, I emplore you to read the articles linked on
this page.

Inside iPhone 2.0: iPhone 3G vs. other smartphones (Last Friday)
Inside iPhone 2.0: the new iPhone 3G Software (Monday)
Inside iPhone 2.0: iPhone OS vs. other mobile platforms (Tuesday)
Inside iPhone 2.0: the new iPhone App Store (Today)

Those are the ones I recommend....

While the iPhone may have some serious limitations, I really think this is the platform of the future, and it's only going to get better. I'm sticking with apple on this one.

I upgraded my 3G one yesterday after my jollies and it hasn't gone well. If I restore it's settings from my backup I can no longer make calls or send texts (god knows why).. setting it up as a new phone works, but it hasn't fixed the slowdown on SMSs and generally feels more sluggish than 2.0 did for me.

Think I might actually downgrade, restore my 2.0 backup and wait for the next version.
